Telltale's The Walking Dead is officially coming to an end this year with its fourth and final season. The episodic action-adventure series is based on Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead comic book series and is one of Telltale's most popular titles, thanks in part to the astounding success of AMC's zombie drama that's also based on the Skybound-published comics.

Although it's been six years since Telltale's The Walking Dead video game series launched with its first season, only three seasons have released thus far, with the occasional additional content, of course. And now, Clementine's journey through the walker-filled world is coming to an end with The Final Season.

Telltale's The Walking Dead Final Season Releases in 2018

Telltale announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2017 that Telltale's The Walking Dead Final Season will release in 2018. While they didn't provide an exact date or time frame for the season's premiere, it seems that the final season may debut either this summer or in the fall, perhaps closer to the holiday season. Although the first season premiered in April, the last two seasons both released in December.

What is The Walking Dead Final Season About?

Telltale's The Walking Dead Final Season marks the end of Clementine's post-apocalyptic journey that began in 2012. As revealed during the game's PAX East 2018 panel, The Final Season takes place after the events of A New Frontier (season 3) and features a significant time jump, with Clementine now much older and presumably more mature than she was in the third season. Because of that time jump, players should expect certain things like generators not to work all the time. By the time season 4 starts, the world is much worse off than when season 3 ended.

Moreover, she will be looking after A.J. this season (someone who doesn't know a world before the walkers), which means she will find him after setting out to look for him last season. Also, this means she will find herself in a similar situation to the one from the first season, in which she was the child who needed protecting. Along with A.J., The Walking Dead Final Season will also feature plenty of new characters who will join Clementine on her journey, including a dog named Rosie, who may or may not die at some point throughout the season, but at least not in the first episode. Plus, at least part of the season takes place in a run-down boarding school.

The Walking Dead is Adding Unscripted Zombie Fights

Telltale's games are scripted by nature; they're designed for players to feel like they are playing through an actual story with a series of preset choices - but the studio is changing things up for The Walking Dead's final season. This time, there will be lots of unscripted zombie fights that will keep players on their toes and routinely put Clementine in mortal danger, just as any zombie game should do.

The Walking Dead Final Season is Getting Minor Updates

One thing that Telltale developers pointed out during their PAX East 2018 panel was that The Walking Dead: A New Frontier was "too colorful," meaning they want to get back to basics for The Final Season. With season 4, they will be scaling back on the contrast and using a color palette that Walking Dead comic book and TV series fans are more used to - a worn-out, decomposing style of art.
