The Tekken video game franchise has spawned a couple of motion picture adaptations in the past, including last year's lackluster live-action Tekken movie. Now the series looks like it will be brought to life in more proper fashion in Tekken: Blood Vengeance, a 3D CGI feature that will include several classic characters from the original Namco fighting games.

A trailer has been released for Blood Vengeance, offering fans an early look at what the film has to offer - in terms of quality computer animation and hyper-kinetic hand-to-hand combat sequences.

For those not familiar with Tekken: there are currently six main installments (with a seventh on the way) in the video game series, which was created by Katsuhiro Harada back in 1994. Each game revolves around a fictional martial arts competition known as The King of Iron First Tournament - with the exception of the non-canon entry, Tekken Tag Tournmanet - and each franchise installment corresponds to the respective incarnation of said event.

Tekken: Blood Vengeance will feature several characters from the original games, including Kazuya Mishima, Jin Kazama, Nina and Anna Williams, and Alisa Boskonovitch. The film was written by Dai Sato (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Cowboy Bebop) and directed by Youichi Mouri - the fellow responsible for overseeing the opening sequences in both the fifth and sixth Tekken games.

The animation on display in this trailer is reminiscent of that in the Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children movie, but the character movement, expressions, and design seem just as good (if not more so) than that video game adaptation. Where Blood Vengeance really looks to stand out is in the area of 3D action, with the fighting-oriented footage on display in this trailer looking pretty slick and stylish - even in comparison to other computer-animated features.

Chances are good that Tekken novices aren't going to find this theatrical preview nearly as intriguing as the diehard fans - still, what other trailer this year has promised a movie that includes combat scenes "shot" in a single take, flying dragons, and kids riding a panda into battle?

Tekken: Blood Vengeance is slated to be released this summer.
