The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are headed to iOS and Android with TMNT: Mutant Madness, a free-to-play mobile RPG that allows players to enjoy decades of franchise lore from a whole new perspective. Since their original comic book stories from the mid-1980s, the iconic superhero team have provided an infectious mix of high-octane sci-fi action and brotherly bonding, all while kicking butt across the streets and sewers of New York City. Through numerous television series, Hollywood movies, and video game adaptations, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have reinvented themselves countless times over the decades.

Publisher Kongregate is working with Animation Throwdown: The Quest for Cards developer Synapse to create the latest video game starring the classic heroes. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Madness is a free-to-play mobile RPG starring the legendary turtles and their grand roster of allies and enemies.

Due out this September for iOS and Android, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Madness doesn't seek to reinvent the free-to-play mobile formula, but it does look like something that can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the likes of Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes. In addition to its colorful art style and wide variety of characters to play with, Mutant Madness also includes a new storyline that follows the Turtles as their battle takes them from New York City to Krang's Technodrome.

The Turtles have starred in some truly fantastic video games over the years, most notably in the side-scrolling beat-em-up days. To this day, Turtles in Time is still recognized as one of the all-time greats of its genre. On the other hand, efforts like 2013's TMNT: Out of the Shadows (not based on the film of the same name) and TMNT: Mutants in Manhattan failed to impress critics or audiences. However, thanks to an unexpected guest appearance in Injustice 2, the viability of the Turtles in the video game space has been established anew.

As a free-to-play mobile game, Mutant Madness may not be the ultimate TMNT experience fans have been waiting for. While the fans await a Turtle title akin to Rocksteady's Batman: Arkham games or Insomniac's blooming Spider-Man series, an app like Mutant Madness can at least tide them over for now. These types of games, with their idle mechanics and microtransaction-driven economy, are great for checking into for a few minutes at a time to level up, tinker with the characters, and play a few matches. For a fan of the franchise, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Madness is shaping up to be a jolly new way to play with the Turtles.
