In 1991, a movie was unleashed on the world titled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, and it brought with it the cultural phenomenon that was Vanilla Ice's 'Ninja Rap.' Now, 24 years later, a new TMNT sequel is poised to rock and roll the place with the power of the ninja turtle bass.
While it's not yet known if next year's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Out of the Shadows will features any contributions from the Ice Man, we do know that it will feature a few characters not seen in the previous movie, namely Casey Jones and Bebop and Rocksteady. In a teaser for a new trailer set to debut tomorrow, we even get to see those characters in action.
The teaser has brief glimpses of Casey Jones skating down the street and what looks like one half of the Bebop and Rocksteady duo tackling a Turtle. Blink and you'll miss them, but tomorrow's full trailer is likely to offer a longer look. Also in the teaser: the Turtles' signature pizza-themed van and Megan Fox returning as April O'Neil.
While he is not shown in the trailer, the Turtles' arch-nemesis Shredder will be making a return as well, although he will be played by a different actor this time around. Shredder will also be joined by his daughter Karai, so between the two of them, and Bebop and Rocksteady, it's a good thing the Turtles will have Casey Jones as an ally to help balance things out. Jones will be played by Arrow's Stephen Amell, which is additional good news for fans of his work on that show.
The first movie in the rebooted TMNT series was released just last year and did well enough in the box office, but it was a critical disaster and did not seem to win over too many old-school Turtles fans. The sequel features a new director (Dave Green instead of Jonathan Liebesman), but still looks to have the indelible imprint of producer Michael Bay, who seemingly has never met an '80s franchise he hasn't wanted to inject with an excessive amount of testosterone.
Whether or not TMNT2 addresses some of the criticisms of its predecessor remains to be seen, but at the very least this newest teaser shows that it will have plenty of action to go around. Not that anyone was assuming a movie produced by Michael Bay would lack action. Come back tomorrow for the full trailer and decide for yourself if, as Vanilla Ice once said, "the power of the Ninja is strong."
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Out of the Shadows will open on June 3, 2016.
