Sure a lot of people had problems with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, but at its core it was a fun enough homage to the franchise’s long history of comics, cartoons, films and toysTMNT 2 is in the works, and there is hope that improvements can be made, so the iconic characters being adapted for the sequel (Casey Jones, Bebop and Rocksteady, Baxter Stockman, a new Shredder) can all be done in the best way possible.

Today we have new information straight from the set of Ninja Turtles 2 about another iconic figure making an appearance in the sequel; although, it may not be what you initially think.

No, it is not another TMNT character cameo pulled from the franchise’s long mythos, but rather a familiar face from the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles live action movie:

Judith Hoag as April O’Neil in TMNT (1990)

That lady in the set photo with Megan Fox is none other than Judith Hoag – aka the original April O’Neil from TMNT (1990). Obviously it’s just a fun Easter egg for longtime fans (that we’ve totally SPOILED here) as Fox’s April O’Neil interviews her counterpart, likely complete with on-the-nose dialogue entendres. By now it’s almost typical for a rebooted franchise to include winking cameos with former stars (see: Shaft, Starsky & Hutch21 Jump Street, Star Trek, etc. etc…), but there’s a reason it works, and it’s that nostalgia always plays to the hardcore fanbase.

As for Judith Hoag: she’s steadily worked in the industry ever since her TMNT days, mostly doing TV bit parts with a few notable recurring roles on shows like Big Love, Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice. For the last few years she’s held down on role on the hit series Nashville, playing Tandy Hampton.

Funny enough, Hoag only played April O’Neil for the first TMNT film; Person of Interest actress Paige Turco took over the role for TMNT 2 & 3 in the early ’90s. If Hoag and Fox’s exchange involves something along the lines of “You’ve been doing this longer I have,” then cue eye roll; that’s reboot role referencing done the wrong way.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 [Insert Subtitle] will be in theaters on June 3, 2016.
