Teen Wolf season 1 episode 6 saw Scott struggle to control his inner beast, with a little help from Stiles and Derek. Teen Wolf is an MTV remake of the cult movie from 1985. The original film starred Michael J. Fox (Back To The Future) as a teenager whose werewolf heritage proves useful when it comes to playing basketball. The film was a goofy but fun horror-comedy, with a firm emphasis on the latter genre. The movie was an unexpected hit but Fox opted out of doing a sequel.

Instead, a young Jason Bateman took over for Teen Wolf Too, playing the cousin of Fox's character. The second time wasn't the charm, as the sequel barely did any business and received dire reviews; Bateman also tends to make fun of it when its mentioned in interviews nowadays. There were plans for a third Teen Wolf movie to star Alyssa Milano (Charmed), but the second movie's response saw it cancelled.

MTV rebooted Teen Wolf as a show in 2011 which starred Tyler Posey as the main character Scott, who is bitten by an Alpha werewolf when the series begins. Rather than being a goofy teen comedy like the first two movies, the revamped Teen Wolf took inspiration from Buffy The Vampire Slayer and treated the horror elements a little more seriously. The show received surprisingly good reviews during its six-season run and provided stars like Dylan O'Brien and Tyler Hoechlin with breakout roles.

Teen Wolf season 1 episode 6 "Heart Monitor" still found Scott struggling to control his powers while using them to his advantage. In this episode, Derek (Tyler Hoechlin) has to train Scott so he can help him find the Alpha. Derek also tells Scott to stay away from his girlfriend Allison because he needs to keep focus. Scott doesn't heed this warning and is later chased by the Alpha after leaving Allison's place, who draws a strange spiral on his car window.

Teen Wolf season 1 episode 6 finds Scott turning to best friend Stiles for help with controlling his anger, which is the key to using his power. Stiles attaches a heart monitor to Scott and they run through various exercises to teach him restraint, including throwing balls at him, which doesn't go so well since Scott rips out of the tape restraining him. Stiles later comes to realize that Scott thinking of Allison calms him down when he loses his temper and advises him to focus on thoughts of her when he gets angry.

Teen Wolf season 1 episode 6 "Heart Monitor" ends with Derek explaining the spiral symbol is a sign of revenge, and he confronts school veterinarian Deaton (Seth Gilliam, The Walking Dead) with the belief he's the Alpha. Stiles, Derek, and Scott decide to summon the Alpha over the school's intercom, with the latter letting out a vicious howl. With that, the Alpha appears suddenly behind Derek, mauling him and forcing Stiles and Scott to hide in the school... a chase that would be picked up in the next episode.
