Dylan O'Brien confirms that he won't be in the upcoming Teen Wolf film and explains why. Fans were excited about the news that the hit MTV show is being revived via a movie that's set for Paramount+. However, many were understandably worried when O'Brien was noticeably absent from the list of stars who are joining the project. Now, he reveals the reason behind his decision to sit out the upcoming endeavor.

The MTV teen-horror drama, starring Tyler Posey as Scott McCall, was based on the original 1985 movie that starred Michael J. Fox, and ran for six years before it wrapped up in 2017. After getting bit by an alpha werewolf, McCall needed to balance his newfound identity with his life as a high school student. But despite being the show's main lead, there was also substantial focus on McCall's best friend, Stiles, and together with their growing pack, they tried protecting Beacon Hill from threats.

Given this, fans are understandably disappointed that O'Brien won't be in the Teen Wolf film. In a new interview with Variety, he opens up about missing the project, saying that while he loves everyone is involved and would've loved to join it, the film's development "happened very fast." So, despite wanting to reunite with his old castmates, he decided to sit this one out. In any case, he was happy with Stiles' ending on the original show. Read his full answer below:

"It was a difficult decision. A lot went into it. The show couldn’t be more dear to me. It was the first thing I ever did I and so many people there are extremely dear to me. It was something I was trying to make work but it all happened very fast. We didn’t really know that it was happening and they kind of just threw it at us a little bit, which is fine because we all love the show. We were trying to figure it out.”

“Ultimately, I just decided it was left in a really good place for me and I still want to leave it there. I wish them well and I’m going to watch it the first night it comes out. I hope it fucking kicks ass, but I’m not going to be in it.”

Aside from Posey, the Teen Wolf film will see the return of Crystal Reed as Allison Argent, Holland Roden as Lydia Martin, Colton Haynes as Jackson Whittemore, Shelley Hennig as Malia Tate, Linden Ashby as Sheriff Noah Stilinski, Orny Adams as Coach Bobby Finstock, JR Bourne as Chris Argent, Seth Gilliam as Dr. Alan Deaton, Ryan Kelley as Deputy Jordan Parrish, Melissa Ponzio as Melissa McCall, and Dylan Sprayberry as Liam Dunbar. Tyler Hoechlin's appearance is still uncertain; while there were reports that he won't be back as Derek Hale, Ian Bohen recently said that he's confident that he will be in it. Arden Cho, however, refused to reprise her role as Kira Yukimura because of pay disparity.

While O'Brien didn't explicitly say it, it sounds like the Teen Wolf film is being hastily put together. For what it's worth, no release date has been set for the project, but it's been revealed that it would essentially function as a backdoor pilot for a spin-off series called Wolf Pack. It's possible that Paramount is more focused on launching the offshoot, discouraging O'Brien to participate. It's worth noting that Stiles was barely in the series' final season because of an injury, and fans were hoping that the new movie could make up for that. Unfortunately, that isn't going to be the case.
