The first wave of nominees for the 2017 Teen Choice Awards have been announced, and they feature a few films and television shows that aren't exactly considered critical darlings. Nominees for awards shows like the Teen Choice Awards and the MTV Movie & TV awards don't typically have a ton of crossover with the prestige ceremonies like the Academy Awards and the Emmys. The nominees that are targeted for these specific awards shows celebrate a lot of blockbuster crowd pleasers from major franchises along with highly rated shows. These are the pop culture phenomenons that appeal the most to a younger audience, and this is their chance to vote. Sometimes, however, they give awards to films and shows that are considered outright critical flops.
For this years Teen Choice Awards, that tradition continues, as the film that earned the most nominations is xXx: The Return of Xander Cage with five. The Fate of the Furious and Power Rangers, two films with mixed critical reception, each earned four nods. Other critically panned films that were nominated include Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, The Space Between Us, The Shack, Baywatch, and Keeping Up With the Joneses, Sandy Wexler, and Table 19. Some of the films that are nominated have been out for less than a couple weeks, including Wonder Woman, Cars 3, and the still-without-critical reviews Transformers: the Last Knight.
In television, long-running and divisive Freeform series Pretty Little Liars dominates with seven nominations. The CW's The Flash earned four nods, with Lethal Weapon, Arrow, Supergirl, This is Us, and The Vampire Diaries earning three. These nominees are more in line with the critical consensus, but still feature some younger-skewing choices, like nominating Fuller House over HBO comedies Veep and Silicon Valley.
The full list of the first wave of nominees is below. Fans have the ability to vote up to ten times for each of the awards over social media until this Thursday at 9:00 PM PT. The show will be telecast live on FOX on August 13th from 8:00-10:00 PM ET.
