Paramount shocked the movie blogosphere yesterday, when it removed G.I. Joe: Retaliation from this year's summer slate barely a month before it was due to open in theaters. Universal is taking advantage of the change - by bumping up the Seth MacFarlane comedy Ted to take Joe's previous spot.
Fox has also moved up Ang Lee's Life of Pi adaptation to take the November 2012 release date previously occupied by Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity (which Warner Bros. has pushed back to 2013). Meanwhile, Millennium has selected a release date for Red Lights, the new thriller from Buried director Rodrigo Cortés.
MacFarlane's feature-lenth writing/directing debut, Ted - or as we like to call it, Family Guy with a Teddy Bear - is now scheduled to arrive on June 29th, instead of two weeks later on July 13th. The R-Rated raunch-com didn't have any direct competition on its original date, where it would've opened against Ice Age: Continental Drift. Ted will now face off against Alex Kurtzman's People Like Us and Steven Soderbergh's Magic Mike; basically, there should not be much (if any) overlap between the three titles.
Life of Pi was originally scheduled to open against the Tom Cruise vehicle One Shot/Reacher, Judd Apatow's This Is Forty, and Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty - with both Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby and Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained due out just a few days afterwards. With its new November 21st date, Pi will square off against the delayed Red Dawn remake, Rise of the Guardians, and David O. Russell's The Silver Linings Playbook. Put simply: Life of Pi now has less intimidating competition during its first week.
Last (but not least): Red Lights will take Ted's previous spot on July 13th. The paranormal drama/thriller boasts a great cast, but isn't generating the sort of buzz that Cortés' Sundance breakout hit Buried managed. Of course, this film will appeal more to the indie movie crowd than mainstream ticket buyers - and may benefit by serving as counter-programming to the kid-friendly antics of the latest Ice Age flick. We shall have to just wait and see on that one.
So, to summarize: Ted is now scheduled to arrive in U.S. theaters on June 29th, 2012.
Red Lights hits U.S. theaters two weeks later on July 13th.
Life of Pi will arrive in U.S theaters (2D and 3D) on November 21st, 2012.
Which (if any) of these films are you looking forward to? Sound off in the comments section.
