Ted Lasso star Toheeb Jimoh talks about Sam and Rebecca's potential rekindling of their relationship in the upcoming season 3 of the acclaimed comedy show. Jimoh recently scored his first Emmy nomination for his work on the series, one of a total of 20 nods the show received for season 2, having taken home the award for Outstanding Comedy Series last year. Ted Lasso also stars Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham, Jeremy Swift, Phil Dunster, Brett Goldstein, and Juno Temple.

Ted Lasso follows the titular American football coach who comes to England to manage AFC Richmond, a struggling professional soccer team. Season 2 saw the burgeoning relationship between Jimoh's Sam, a right winger for the team, and Rebecca (Waddingham), Richmond's owner, which ended due in part to Rebecca's fear of heartbreak. Ted Lasso season 3 is expected to be the show's last, with the creators having said from the beginning that it would have a three-season run.

When asked in an interview with Deadline, Jimoh doesn't directly say if Sam and Rebecca will get back together, preferring to avoid potential spoilers. However, he does say that season 3 will explore Sam's personal life, and how his closeness with Rebecca influences it. He goes on to say that the last season will provide a sense of resolution for the characters, allowing them closure in their story arcs. Read Jimoh's quote below:

I can’t tell you anything about that! I can’t spill the beans. What I can say is that we do get into Sam’s love life a little bit this season and it will be very interesting for people to see how that all unfolds and where it goes. You’ll see what his relationship with Rebecca is like and what it turns into. It will be really interesting no matter what side of the fence you’re on, whether you’re a TedBecca fan or SamBecca fan. There’s going to be a really interesting resolution for all the characters.

Jimoh's performance is largely seen as the breakout role of his career, with his character taking a more central role in season 2. Similarly to Ted Lasso's Rebecca storyline being crucial for its dramatic stakes, the pair's growth will likely inform their plot resolutions. Jimoh's quote implies that the final season will continue to expand on Sam as a character and give him a sense of narrative finality when the series airs its ending.

One of the many things Ted Lasso does well is giving its story a sense of heart without turning to easy sentimentality or quick answers on the complexities of human relationships. Sam and Rebecca's relationship in season 2 illustrated how messy romantic feelings can be, without resorting to cheap melodrama or unconvincing character turns. As much as fans (and, it seems, Jimoh) would like to see the two back together, Ted Lasso might have completely different plans for their endings, and fans will just have to wait until season 3 premieres to find out.
