Ted Lasso season 2, the endearing soccer comedy streaming on Apple TV+, has set its official release date for July 23rd, and here’s everything we know about the upcoming story. Apple confirmed a second season just days before the series premiered in August 2020, and more information about the story this season has been released. The award-winning series led by Jason Sudeikis has recently won a collection of award trophies, including the Critics Choice award for Best Comedy Series, and a Golden Globe for Sudeikis. It’s no surprise the beloved show powered through the pandemic to give audiences a much anticipated second season.

Ted Lasso, which has already been greenlit for season 3, follows an American college football coach who is brought in to manage English Premier League club AFC Richmond after the new team owner Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham) hires Lasso in a misguided attempt to sabotage the team. What she didn’t expect was that Ted would be eternally optimistic, and have an infectiously positive outlook on everything, charming even the coldest of hearts, like the handsome but misguided football (soccer) star Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster). Ted Lasso season 2 will focus on the aftermath of the AFC Richmond team being relegated down from the Premier League after Manchester City won in the final moments of the season 1 finale thanks to Jamie's unselfish pass to his teammate. The extended Ted Lasso season 2 will focus more on the personal lives of the team as much as the football matches, making it ripe for more Golden Globes wins.

Here's what's known about season 2's story so far. Showrunner Bill Lawrence has confirmed that season 2 will not address the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, the team will struggle to adjust to their lower league status, with Ted focusing the team’s attention toward leaving behind their losing streak. It's also known that the team will hire a psychologist named Sharon, to be played by I May Destroy You’s Sarah Niles. She will help the players through this unexpected transition, and judging by her reluctance to accept Ted’s homemade cookies in the trailer due to her no-sugar diet, it's clear that Sharon's presence may be another one that impacts Ted in a significant way.

Ted will also adjust to his life without his now ex-wife Michelle (Andrea Anders) and his young son, Henry (Gus Turner), who both returned to the United States. The lovable Keeley Jones (Juno Temple) and newly retired Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) will continue dating, and one of season 2's subplots will likely be how Roy adjusts to his new life on the sidelines. As for Rebecca Welton, according to the trailer, she'll start dating again; hopefully, her new love interest will be the opposite of her vile ex-husband Rupert Mannion (Anthony Head).

Ted Lasso season 2 will no doubt be a redemption story. While the team will face struggles, Ted’s illuminating, yet often frustrating kindness will encourage the team to move forward. As Ted believes, everything will work out the way it’s supposed to. As Ted has already shown himself to be one who never gives up on someone else, don’t be surprised if Jamie Tartt makes an unexpected return to the team, too.
