Captain America: Civil War deconstructed everything within Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, exposing the growing rifts between certain team members and digging up old pain. However, there were some conspicuously absent members of the Avengers team during the superhero clash – most notably the Incredible Hulk and Thor. While his cohorts duked it out on the battlefield, it appears the Mjolnir-wielder was still trying to keep himself busy.
At the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con, though, Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi shared an amusing little short entitled 'Team Thor.' This clip was part of a larger sizzle reel for Ragnarok, teasing what the MIA Asgardian prince was up to during the events of Civil War.
Marvel has finally released the sketch online for devotees not lucky enough to catch it during the Marvel panel at SDCC 2016. In the hilarious skit, Thor explains how he’s taking a break from the world-saving business. He also has his new “average” roommate help him craft “electronic letters” to Captain America and Iron Man (and time to put together a cute little bed for Mjolnir). The Asgardian prince also displays his detective work on a white board, keying fans into his search for “the purple man in the floating chair” (Thanos) and the Infinity Stones. Thor also lunches with Bruce Banner, during which Tony Stark dials the Hulk looking for backup. As the sketch concludes, the Asgardian barely hides his dejection and decides to start his own team, hence "Team Thor."
The comical short will merely be one of the exciting bonus features released with the Captain America: Civil War Blu-ray and DVD next month. The home version also includes a featurette which explores the creation of the impressive airport battle scene and an in-depth look at Black Panther. In addition, it will showcase a number of deleted scenes, such as Ant-Man/Giant-Man (Paul Rudd) signing up for Team Cap and Bucky using Captain America’s shield – as well as an amusing blooper reel from the film.
Featurettes like Black Panther and "Team Thor" also hint at the future action fans can expect to hit the theaters within the next couple years. While fans will chuckle at "the purple man in the floating chair" references, and moments like "I don't have a phone. Send a raven," they also understand how serious (for movies, anyway) his next adventure will be. With the events of Thor: Ragnarok just over a year away, the universe-rending action of Avengers: Infinity War draws ever closer. New clues have regularly emerged from the set, teasing what fans can expect from the road trip buddy comedy realm-destroying epic when it arrives in theaters.
One thing's for sure, the ripples of Ragnarok will be seen across the Nine Realms as the "purple man" grows ever nearer. It will be exciting to find out more from Asgard as things develop. From its earliest moments, Phase 3 is really shaping up to be something very different and very exciting for the MCU.
Captain America: Civil War will be released in Digital HD on September 2nd and on 3-D Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, VOD, and Digital SD September 13.
