To close out a chaotic 2020, Taylor Swift shared a photo of herself in a bear costume and Midsommar started trending on Twitter. Midsommar is a 2019 film that follows a group of friends who travel to Sweden for the Midsommar festival, which starts off as an idyllic celebration but quickly morphs into something nightmarish. It stars Florence Pugh as the grieving Dani, with Jack Reynor, Will Poulter, Isabelle Grill, William Jackson Harper, and Vilhelm Blomgren joining her in the cast. Midsommar writer and director Ari Aster was catapulted to fame in the horror genre after his highly successful directorial debut Hereditary.

It seems even Taylor Swift is an Aster fan, as she tweeted an apparent reference to Midsommar's final act where one character is sewn into the body of a bear. Swift's photo features her in a bear costume with the caption, "bye 2020, it's been weird." Fans immediately picked up on the reference, comparing Swift's photo to stills and scenes from Midsommar.

Perhaps Midsommar will enjoy a resurgence in popularity as a result of Swift's photo. The film ends on a cathartic - albeit highly disturbing - note, so it could serve as a kind of poetic metaphor for the end of the year. The idea of burning it all down (metaphorically, of course) and starting fresh is certainly an appealing one after the nightmare that was 2020.
