Taylor Swift’s All Too Well short-film briefly mentions one time where an unnamed actress helped Swift during an emotional breakdown, and there already are a couple of theories on who this actress is. Taylor Swift is best known for her music career, which began in 2006 with her self-titled album, and she has since released a total of eight studio albums, all of them successful with fans and critics. Like many other musicians, Taylor Swift has also branched out to film and TV, and her latest work. All Too Well: The Short Film, mixed the best of her two worlds: music and film.

In 2012, Swift released the song “All Too Well” as part of her album Red. The lyrics tell Swift’s heartbreak after a break-up, detailing specific moments that have been frozen in time. “All Too Well” was a critical and commercial success and is considered one of her best-written songs, with praise going towards its powerful and detailed lyrics. In June 2021, Swift announced the re-recording of Red, now titled Red (Taylor’s Version), as well as the release of the original 10-minute version of “All Too Well”, and in November, she shared a teaser of the accompanying short-film for the song, starring Sadie Sink as Dylan O’Brien. All Too Well was released online on November 12, and fans didn’t take long to come up with all types of theories about specific moments and lyrics.

One of the biggest mysteries in All Too Well comes in the third verse, with the lines “not weeping in a party bathroom, some actress asking me what happened, you. That’s what happened, you”. Fans have taken social media to share their theories on who the unnamed actress who comforted Swift could be, and so far, there are three candidates, all with evidence that supports the theory but also a couple of details that (according to fans), don’t add up: Jennifer Aniston, Anne Hathaway, and Maggie Gyllenhaal. Many fans are convinced the “actress” is Aniston as in 2011 it was reported that she gave some love advice to Swift at the People’s Choice Awards, not long after the singer’s relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal (heavily rumored to be the inspiration behind the song) ended.

However, many have pointed out that those reports don’t match the All Too Well timeline, and that Aniston’s advice wasn't exactly about her relationship but about the pressure on her love life from the media. Another popular theory suggests the “actress” is Anne Hathaway, who in an interview with Glamour UK in 2015, shared that she met Swift when she was 20 and dating Gyllenhall, as he and Hathaway were working on Love & Other Drugs at the time. According to fans, the timeline in the Anne Hathaway theory fits, and so many believe she is the one referred to in All Too Well. Others, however, believe it was someone closer to Swift and Gyllenhaal: Maggie Gyllenhaal, who (if the song really is about him) is referred to at the beginning of the song. Some have interpreted the “party” as a smaller gathering, perhaps a family one, where Maggie Gyllenhaal could have comforted the singer during a difficult time in her relationship with her brother.

Of all three theories, the Maggie Gyllenhaal one is the most criticized one as some details don’t make sense to fans, such as her being mentioned as her partner’s sister at the beginning and then as “some actress”. It’s unlikely Taylor Swift will reveal the name of the “actress” in All Too Well at some point, so fans will continue to speculate about it – unless the actress herself comes forward and ends this mystery.
