Warning! Spoilers ahead for Taskmaster #5

In the final issue of Marvel Comics' Taskmaster miniseries, the infamous mercenary pulls out the big guns against the Black Widow, using several moves from some of Marvel's greatest fighters in a single fight. Taskmaster has been trying to clear his name, despite all the false evidence that he killed Maria Hill. While globetrotting all over working with Nick Fury Jr. to potentially find the proof, Black Widow finally catches up to him with the intent to kill in the series' conclusion, seeking vengeance for Hill's death. Naturally, this prompts Taskmaster to do all he can to survive, which is why he uses so many different moves in defense against her.

As soon as Maria Hill's death was staged to appear as though Taskmaster did the deed, Tony Masters went on the run with Fury to figure out how to unlock the project she was working on before she was killed. The project, known as the Rubicon Trigger, had been built during the days when SHIELD was HAMMER and was run by Norman Osborn. Hoping that it would help them learn the truth, Taskmaster gained the kinesic signatures of Agent Coulson, Ami Han, and General Okoye of Wakanda in order to unlock the secret program. However, the vengeful Black Widow arrived shortly after to try and kill him.

Now, Taskmaster #5 from writer Jed MacKay with art by Alessandro Vitti sees Black Widow facing Taskmaster, completely ready for a fight with the intent to kill. However, Taskmaster is a smart and capable enough fighter to know that he was going to lose even before the fight began, though that didn't stop him from trying to survive. Given the nature of this impossible-to-win fight, Masters employed a series of moves he had learned from watching some of Marvel's best fighters, and he used them all in this one fight to try and throw the Black Widow off her rhythm.

It totally makes sense and is essentially expected for Daredevil, Iron Fist, and Shang-Chi to all have moves Taskmaster would be keen to unleash. However, the addition of Batroc the Leaper is pretty funny as well, though in all honesty a pretty good call on Masters' part to keep Natasha off balance. However, the Black Widow still succeeds in beating Taskmaster down just as he predicted, though Maria Hill herself got Natasha to stop just in time so she could explain to her, Fury, and Masters the reason why she faked her own death and made Taskmaster look to be the killer.

The long and short of it was that Hill needed the Rubicon Trigger opened in order to destroy it (it's a secret doomsday device of Osborn's design). As a result, she saw the only option to go forward would be to manipulate all three of them like pawns. Upon learning he had simply been used, Taskmaster got pretty ticked. While he did open the Trigger for Hill with the physical signatures he had copied, he also turned on the program with a 60-second timer, leaving Natasha, Fury, and Maria all scrambling to reverse the countdown while Taskmaster left the scene. In the end, Taskmaster proved himself to be quite the formidable and cunning merc that he's always been, though his use of multiple fighting styles from a variety of different heroes in the same fight against the Black Widow is certainly the cherry on top of this entertaining Marvel Comics series.
