In recent science fiction and fantasy movies, it’s not uncommon to have beautiful women in many of the lead roles – in addition to the many years of women playing secondary or throw-away parts.
The treatment of a female characters is important to the quality of a movie. Are they leading the action or contributing to the hero? Are they on-screen simply to be eye-candy, or do the women have a grander purpose? Movie-goers and celebrity fans, from adolescents to older adults, seem to have an endless supply of amazing women to argue about.
There are several reasons why a woman is considered hot in a sci-fi/fantasy movie, but not all of them are based on appearance alone. Besides how attractive, sexy, or cute a might look, being hot can also encompass her attitude, intelligence, and general awesomeness.
Whether you enjoy watching the actress or the movie, you will probably agree on many of the choices in the following list of 15 Hottest Women From Sci-Fi/Fantasy Movies.
15. Gillian Anderson – The X-Files (movies)
In The X-Files TV show and movies, Gillian Anderson plays medical doctor Dana Scully, an analytical, no-nonsense FBI Agent who got partnered with Agent Fox Mulder, who has an open mind about the supernatural and unexplained. Anderson’s fierce and near-constant glare could intimidate the toughest of aliens, but underneath that pretty complexion and fire-red hair lies a quick-witted, analytical forensics expert capable of sending hearts aflutter with her intellect.
While you don’t see her fight very often, Scully battles evil and enemies with logical and methodical investigating. With the help of Mulder, she’ll always get her man. But there are plenty of episodes where she exudes a softer, vulnerable side, especially when dealing with Mulder’s past or in a dangerous situation.
14. Denise Richards – Starship Troopers
Denise Richards has had an amazing career in TV and movies – and still manages to work tirelessly in the industry. Whether playing tiny roles on television in her early days or lead roles in TV series over the past 10 years, Richards brings vivacity to any character she plays.
But her hottest role in a science fiction movie has to be when she played Lieutenant/Captain Carmen Ibanez in Starship Troopers. Ibanez is the bubbly pilot antsy to get a promotion to a starship. Throughout the movie, her cute smile and career-driven attitude melted her boyfriend’s and her colleagues’ hearts.
13. Megan Fox – Transformers
It’s hard to imagine any list of this time not including Megan Fox on it. Especially the Megan Fox who played Mikaela Banes in Transformers.
Mikaela was a motorcycle-riding, mechanic who wore short skirts, even shorter shorts, and tight tops with the task of showing as much skin as possible. No matter if she was chatting with Shia LeBeouf’s character or running from the Decepticons, Megan Fox always had the unforgettable figure and perfect red lips that stole scenes away from the robots, Shia, the landscape, and action.
Fox’s acting often gets criticized and some people don’t give Transformers enough credit, except in this review of Transformers: The Last Knight, but there’s a reason her last name fits her so well. She is a stone cold fox.
12. Liv Tyler – The Lord of the Rings
As Arwen Undomiel, Liv Tyler epitomizes the elvish meaning of the character’s name “noble maiden.” Comparing Liv Tyler in real life to her character in The Lord of The Rings, it’s apparent the make-up department had an easy job (minus the elven ears). Liv’s striking features would make you wonder if she really wasn’t half-elven if you met her on the street. Her waist-length dark hair just adds to the otherworldly effect – she seem to glow on screen.
For the noble part of the name’s meaning, it didn’t matter if she was riding in on a horse to save Frodo Baggins or dressed in pure white strolling innocently through Rivendell, Arwen earned her spot as the future queen of Middle-earth.
11. Sigourney Weaver – Alien/Galaxy Quest
Sigourney Weaver gets double points in this list. First is her early role in Alien where she plays Ellen Ripley on a ship returning to Earth with a crew in stasis. The computer running the ship wakes the crew to investigate a distress signal from a nearby planetoid. Whether in her underwear and uniform coveralls, fans have drooled over Ripley for decades. By the end of the movie, Ripley’s running around the ship with big guns, fighting off aliens and reaching sci-fi icon status.
The second movie is a total opposite for what makes Sigourney Weaver hot: Galaxy Quest. Here Weaver plays Gwen DeMarco, who played Lieutenant Tawny Madison in the fictitious TV show Galaxy Quest. Her role in the movie’s TV show was to basically repeat what the computer said. Let’s face it: Weaver’s blonde hair and cleavage (sometimes with an accidentally-ripped open shirt) are another brand of tongue-in-cheek hotness, poking fun at her geek heartthrob status.
10. Natasha Henstridge – Species
Who do you think of when you wonder if anyone has created a half-human, half-alien hybrid that only has one thing on its mind? To mate? Surely you think of Natasha Henstridge in Species. Not only is she strong, intelligent, and violent if provoked- she’s also sexy and has a smile that will mesmerize you.
Henstridge went on to do Species II and Species III (for TV), but there’s something about her performance in the first movie that is incomparable. When she’s attracting males with her slicked-back blonde hair, Henstridge as Sil takes her hotness to “out of this world” levels. She’s not just a pretty human/alien face, she also wants to be happy by finding the perfect man. To mate with.
9. Angelina Jolie – The Tomb Raider movies
If there’s one actress who has the look and attitude of an iconic character, it’s Angelina Jolie playing Lara Croft in Tomb Raider. From the video game, we know Lara Croft totes dual pistols and has the memorable outfit of shorts and tight, black tank top. Jolie wears similar outfits that form to her curvy figure while battling bad guys in outrageous actions scenes where she escapes mostly unscathed.
She’s fought when wet, when in her nightgown, when flying through the air using ropes, on a motorcycle: Jolie’s iconic performance as Croft was a no-brainer for this list.
8. Scarlett Johansson – The Island
Scarlett Johansson plays Jordan Delta Two, who lives in a compound where there are extremely strict rules. She and others who live there are led to believe the outside world has been too contaminated to live in. Each week, a lottery is performed for one person to go live on The Island. Johansson plays the innocent Jordan Delta Two with beautiful precision.
The actress is famous for her blonde hair, full lips, and great body. In The Island, her innocence quickly turns to confusion, then to wonderment as she and Lincoln Six Echo (played by Ewan McGregor) escape the compound. All those emotions and how stunning she looks in the compound uniforms make Johansson an easy addition to this list. Plus, she’s a clone in the movie, so the more Scarlett Johanssons running around the better, right?
7. Kate Beckinsale – Underworld
Kate Beckinsale plays Selene in the Underworld series. This sci-fi world is a far cry from her romantic comedies like Serendipity and Click. She’s still striking in those movies, but anyone knows that when a gorgeous British woman puts on a skin-tight leather outfit in order to battle the Lycans in the Underworld universe, it will take things to the next level.
Selen has vibrant blue eyes that focus on dealing death to the Lycans, and rich, dark hair that manages to stay perfect no matter if she’s using guns to shoot down her foes or hand-to-hand combat. Beckinsale shows moments of anger, but she also provides viewers with a charm that makes you think, “What an adorable assassin.”
6. Olivia Wilde – Tron: Legacy
Did you ever think you’d fawn over a computer program? If you’ve watched TRON: Legacy, and thought “Olivia Wilde looks amazing” then congratulations, you found a computer program hot. And that’s okay: the program is played by Olivia Wilde, after all.
Wilde plays Quorra, a computer algorithm that is enlisted to help stop another program named Clu before it invades the real world. Despite being a computer program, Quorra is bursting with charm and personality so that you can’t take your eyes off her.
Another thing that’s enticing about watching Wilde is the outfit she wears during the entire movie. Wilde is a famous beauty and it seems that she’s the one making the outfit flattering rather than the outfit flattering her figure.
5. Charlize Theron – Mad Max: Fury Road
There’s hot, then there’s smokin’ hot. And smokin’ hot definitely refers to Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road. The Academy Award-winning actress from South Africa plays Imperator Furiosa, who betrays an evil dictator to save the women he has held captive. Theron portrays the character with such fierceness that fans of the Mad Max series and Theron probably had a hard time remembering what other movies she’s been.
Carrying guns, sporting a buzzcut, using her prosthetic arm, and driving furiously through the wastelands gives Theron an easy upper-hand against any other movie she’s been in. Even with her face half-covered in grease paint, Furiosa is absolutely captivating. Let’s hope she continues this look in the rumored prequel.
4. Jane Fonda – Barbarella
Jane Fonda as Barbarella in the movie of the same name is a throw-back goddess from the 1960s. In Barbarella, Fonda plays a representative of the United Earth government of the 41st century in search of Durand Durand, who has a ray gun that could eradicate all of humanity.
Throughout the movie, Fonda consistently wears full body stockings, see through tiny tube tops, and thigh-high boots. Any number of the outfits showcase her amazing legs and phenomenal body. She does use some futuristic weapons, but it’s Fonda who make even the weapons sexier.
3. Milla Jovovich – The Fifth Element
Milla Jovovich has taken many science fiction roles in her career such as the zombie-slaying Alice in Resident Evil and the superheroic Violet in Ultraviolet. However, in The Fifth Element, Jovovich plays a “supreme being” named Leeloo. She ends up in Bruce Willis’s taxi cab where she and four gemstones are the objects of capture for many bad guys. At first, she’s an innocent who can’t speak English, but as we soon learn, she knows quite a bit about the universe. And fighting.
Leeloo’s fighting prowess, pure spirit, and bright orange hair cemented her as an iconic character in sci-fi movies – a status Jovovich has maintained in the nearly 20 years since. Of course, that unforgettable bandage outfit designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier didn’t hurt either.
2. Zoe Saldana – Star Trek (Reboot Movies)
Since the original series, Star Trek has been known for trailblazing women characters. The beautiful Nichelle Nichols was an early trailblazer on TV and that tradition was continued with the rebooted movie series that started in 2009.
Who can take their eyes off Zoe Saldana (also known for Guardians of the Galaxy) as Lieutenant Uhura looks in the Star Trek reboot movies? From wearing the Federation-issued short skirts that show off her gorgeous legs to the away team’s disguise on the Klingon homeworld, Saldana dons it all well.
But she’s more than just a pretty face on the Enterprise. She speaks Klingon (as well as many other languages), fights Klingons (while holding her own), and is not afraid to tell her boyfriend Spock about his relationship shortcomings.
1. Carrie Fisher – Star Wars
What’s the first scene that comes to mind when you think of Carrie Fisher? Most will remember Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia in the skimpy bikini in front of Jabba the Hut in Star Wars. The bikini doesn’t define Fisher in Star Wars, but should be remembered along with the flowing white robes and hair buns and the uniforms she wore for the Rebel alliance.
While she bared a lot of skin wearing that memorable outfit, that’s not the sole reason why fans fell in love with her in that movie. Leia was a smart leader and capable fighter that matched (and often surpassed) the skills of a Jedi, Wookie, or Han Solo. She was adept with a gun as well as playfully insulting others while getting them out of a sticky situation.
