Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless colonel (Woody Harrelson). After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both of their species and the future of the planet.
This is the third installment of the rebooted Planet of the Apes film series that started in 2011 with Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The franchise originally began in 1968 with Planet of the Apes, which was renowned for its twist ending. That movie spawned four additional sequels, ending with Battle for the Planet of the Apes. In 2001, director Tim Burton released a remake of the first movie with the hopes of launching a new series, but the film's troubled production and poor reception led to Fox temporarily placing the franchise on hold. Ten years later, the studio brought Apes back with motion-capture guru Andy Serkis as the lead chimp Caesar, and War's two predecessors have gone on to earn much critical acclaim for their storytelling and visual effects.
War for the Planet of the Apes serves as the end of Caesar's story, but the producers intend to keep the series going for at least another film.
