Synopsis
The Joker and Harley Quinn, played by Jared Leto and Margot Robbie respectively, will star in a still untitled movie as part of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) expansion. The audience already had a glimpse of the two’s relationship in the movie Suicide Squad where the beginning of their complicated love story was explored. Their standalone film is described as a “criminal love story.”
Warner Bros and directors John Requa and Glenn Ficarra are in the final stages of negotiations for the said film. In the meantime, Leto and Robbie are set to reprise their roles in the Suicide Squad sequel that is due in 2019.
The two characters appeared in Batman’s world about 50 years apart. Joker appeared as the psychopathic criminal nemesis of the hero in Gotham in 1940 via Batman No. 1 comic book. He was created by Bill Finger, Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson. Meanwhile, Harley Quinn first appeared in Batman: The Animated Series in September 1992 . She was created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm. She later appeared in the comics in September 1993 in The Batman Adventures #12.
In DCEU’s Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn was formerly known as Dr. Harleen Quinzel, a psychiatrist in Arkham Asylum where Joker was confined. She eventually falls in love with her patient and becomes his ally. Their love story is such that Harley has fallen deep in love with Joker and it was only much later when Joker realizes that he has fallen in love with her for real too.
During the squad’s suicidal mission, Joker tries to save Harley but failed. Towards the end of the movie, Joker is seen successfully breaking into Harley’s cell. What happens to the two, whether they run away together or not, will be seen in the upcoming Suicide Squad sequel to be show in 2019.
As of this writing, it is not revealed whether the Joker and Harley Quinn movie will pick up from the sequel or explore the beginnings of their relationship.
