This is the sequel to the hard-hitting crime drama Sicario, which was directed by Denis Villeneuve and released in 2015. Though the original was a modest box office success ($84.8 million worldwide), the enthusiastic response led to the creation of a followup. Soldado was first announced in 2015, and the plan was for the film to center around Benicio del Toro's acclaimed hitman character. Villeneuve was unable to return to direct due to his commitment to Blade Runner 2049. There has been talk about a third film.
