Shovel Knight is the first entry in the Shovel Knight franchise by Yacht Club Games. Players take on the role of Shovel Knight, a noble warrior who wields a shovel in combat. Shovel Knight enters solitude after a battle and supposedly claims the life of his lover and partner in battle, Shield Knight. However, when the evil being known as the Enchantress darkens the land again, Shovel Knight takes up his shovel to stop her evil machinations.

Summary
Shovel Knight is the first entry in the Shovel Knight franchise by Yacht Club Games. Players take on the role of Shovel Knight, a noble warrior who wields a shovel in combat. Shovel Knight enters solitude after a battle and supposedly claims the life of his lover and partner in battle, Shield Knight. However, when the evil being known as the Enchantress darkens the land again, Shovel Knight takes up his shovel to stop her evil machinations. Players will battle across several environments, from plains, and lava-filled caverns, to an airship high in the sky. The gameplay consists of jumping, bouncing, digging, and striking with Shovel Knight's shovel, along with powerful sub-weapons he will acquire along the way. Initially a Kickstarter title, Shovel Knight succeeded and ended up on most modern consoles. This first entry experienced four separate expansion packs, allowing players to experience new playable characters, such as foes turned friends like Specter Knight and King Knight.
