Synopsis

Set in a dystopian future Japan in which dogs have been quarantined on the remote eponymous island due to a "canine flu", Isle of Dogs follows five local dogs—Chief, Rex, Boss, Duke, and King. They are fed up with their isolated existence until a boy named Atari Kobayashi ventures to the island to search for his dog, Spots. Atari receives their help and they will protect him from the Japanese authorities who have come to retrieve him.

This is the latest film from director Wes Anderson and his second stop-motion animated movie (following 2009's Fantastic Mr. Fox). Anderson first announced the project in 2015. He was inspired by the films of Japanese director Akira Kurosawa and the holiday television specials produced by Rankin/Bass. Fox Searchlight Pictures acquired the distribution rights in December 2016 with the intention of releasing it in 2018.
