This is the third installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy sub-franchise in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Plot details are currently unknown, but the film will set up the next 10-20 years of the MCU. Artwork is from the second film.
Guardians began life as a very obscure Marvel Comics title, with the original iteration of the team debuting in 1969’s Marvel Super-Heroes #18. They were given their own series in 1976 (Marvel Presents) and later a self-titled comic in 1990, which ran for 62 issues. In 2008, a new team of Guardians was introduced in Annihilation: Conquest #6.
The property reached new levels of popularity in 2014, when the first Guardians of the Galaxy film was released. It earned widespread praise from critics and fans, breaking box office records. Overnight, the likes of Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket, Groot, and Drax were some of the most marketable figures in the MCU. A sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, kicked off the summer 2017 movie season, and likewise earned positive reviews en route to high box office numbers. The characters are set to appear in Avengers: Infinity War before resuming their standalone series in the Marvel cosmos.
James Gunn, who wrote and directed the previous two entries, is returning for the third film and has said this will be the end of this current iteration of the Guardians.
