Synopsis

A look at the life of the astronaut, Neil Armstrong, and the legendary space mission that led him to become the first man to walk on the moon on July 20, 1969.

This is the latest film from director Damien Chazelle, following his Oscar win for the musical La La Land. The film reunites Chazelle with Ryan Gosling, who will play Armstrong. Based on James R. Hansen's biography of the astronaut, First Man takes place from 1961 to 1969, leading up to the Apollo 11 mission. The movie has been in development since 2003, originally envisioned as a vehicle for Clint Eastwood to direct. Gosling signed on to portray Armstrong in 2015, with Chazelle coming onboard later. Principal photography commenced in October 2017.
