Lifeguard Mitch Buchannon (Dwayne Johnson) and a brash new recruit (Zac Efron) uncover a criminal plot that threatens the future of the bay.
Baywatch began as a television series about Los Angeles lifeguards who protected the California beaches. Among its stars were David Hasselhoff, Pamela Anderson, and Alexandra Paul. The show ran for just one season in 1989 before being cancelled due to low ratings, but it was revived by Hasselhoff and the series creators for the syndication market, and it became one of the most popular shows on the air. Baywatch lasted for 11 seasons. In 1999, Baywatch underwent a cast and location change to become Baywatch Hawaii. The property also had a spinoff titled Baywatch Nights and multiple direct to video films.
This 2017 reboot starring Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron was conceived as an R-rated comedy in the vein of Phil Lord and Chris Miller's 21 Jump Street relaunch. A sequel has not been confirmed yet.
