After learning her astrophysicist father is being held captive on a distant planet deep in the grip of a universe-spanning evil, Meg Murry works with her highly intelligent younger brother, her classmate, and three astral travelers to save him.
A Wrinkle In Time is based on the book of the same name by Madeline L'Engle, which was originally published in 1962. The novel received widespread acclaim, winning the Newberry Medal, Sequoyah Book Award, and Lewis Carrol Shelf Award. It is the first title in the Time Quintet series, which follows the Murray and O'Keefe families. Disney originally adapted the story for a 2003 television movie before green lighting a theatrical version.
This film was originally going to have a production budget of around $35 million, but that changed drastically over time. Director Ava DuVernay becomes the first woman of color to helm a film that costs $100 million or more. DuVernay was hired for the job in February 2016, with high-profile cast members like Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Chris Pine, Zach Galifianakis, and Michael Peña joining months after. Youngster Storm Reid was cast as lead Meg Murry in September 2016. Principal photography began in November 2016 and ran through early 2017.
