The future of Taboo, the BBC period drama which premiered in 2017, depends on series star Tom Hardy. Based on a story written by Hardy and his father Chips, Taboo is a mystery fueled by love and betrayal.

In Taboo season 1, the show focused on James Keziah Delaney (Hardy) as he returned to London to inherit what remained of his father’s shipping empire. Returning home during a time of war, after being presumed dead, soon proves to be a perilous decision for Delaney. With both the government and his father’s competitors seeking that same inheritance, the first eight episodes delve into Delany’s struggles to dodge his family’s many enemies and stay alive. Max Richter, the famed composer, who has contributed to everything from Black Mirror to Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island, worked on the score. Steven Knight, who previously worked with Hardy on Locke, directed all eight episodes.

It’s been more than two years since Taboo season 2 was announced, and the wait may last longer yet. According to Deadline, while speaking at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, FX president John Landgraf said the prospects of the show all depend on what Hardy wants to do. FX also airs Taboo and its president revealed that there have been discussions about continuing the series for a potential third season as well. This matches up with what Knight, who is also one of the show’s creators, has said in the past.

While he was upfront about the possibility that Taboo might not continue beyond its initial run of episodes, Landgraf floated the idea that the series could return without the character of Delaney as the main protagonist. Hardy would remain a part of Taboo, he explained, albeit not the very center of it. Praising Hardy’s commitment and passion for the show, Landgraf affirmed that the determining factors come down to Hardy’s willingness and availability.

Between collaborating on the the script for Venom 2, which will have Andy Serkis as its director, and starring in several projects, Hardy might find himself stretched a little too thin. Other than Venom 2, and the fact that the comic book adaptation proved wildly successful at the box office, Hardy will be returning to the role of Max Rockatansky in a sequel to Fury Road, though that has yet to really get off the ground. He will also star in a remake of A Christmas Carol. Set to air this coming December, it will serve as a Taboo reunion of sorts, as Knight is both a writer and executive producer on the holiday-themed miniseries.
