Sylvester Stallone's titular character in Samaritan is essentially a superhero version of Rocky Balboa and John Rambo, and that's perfect for the movie and its eponymous hero. Sylvester Stallone has built his career around playing larger-than-life underdog characters with incredible hidden strength, and it would seem that Samaritan will afford him another opportunity to play just that. The Samaritan trailer showcases Sylvester Stallone's superhero, giving the three-time Oscar nominee an earnest crack at cinema's most lucrative genre.

Samaritan will see Stallone play the titular down-and-out hero who has been living a life of obscurity after being presumed dead for many years. After stepping in to defend a young boy (Javon Walton) from bullies, Samaritan is dragged back into the world of heroics. Stallone's titular superhero is shown in the trailer to have enhanced strength, agility, superhuman durability, and healing factor.

The character of Samaritan actually brings Stallone's superhero very close to his two most iconic roles: John Rambo and Rocky Balboa - of the Rambo and Rocky franchises, respectively. Both of those characters are defined by their remarkable strength and durability, as well as their roles as down-on-their-luck men with fighting spirits but strong moral compasses. The idea that Samaritan will revisit Stallone's most winning character traits while actually embracing their more outlandish elements is actually a very good sign for the upcoming superhero movie.

Embracing the same traits that made the Rocky and Rambo movies so successful is a smart move. Not only will Samaritan allow Stallone to fall into a role he should feel very comfortable in, but it can also improve on his other franchises: though Rambo and Rocky are great, they're unrealistic, but realism is much less of a concern for the superhero genre. This means that Samaritan leaves Stallone free to do what he does best without potentially opening the door to the criticisms his other iconic characters often face.

Of course, there's also the potential for incredible success just through Samaritan's genre alone. Superhero movies make up a significant portion of each year's highest-grossing films, and the genre practically guarantees an audience. Combined with Stallone's star power and his reputation for playing characters not dissimilar to Samaritan, the film has the potential to strike a winning chord.

As Sylvester Stallone's Rocky and Rambo movies are massively successful, the fact that Samaritan seemingly borrows aspects of their protagonists' respective characterizations is a very good sign. Stallone led both of those franchises to incredible popularity, and his ability to bring larger-than-life action heroes to life is legendary. With all of that in mind, it would seem that Samaritan may just have the perfect lead in Sylvester Stallone and also the perfect story to suit him.
