Creed II co-writer and co-star Sylvester Stallone has revealed a cool fan-made poster for the sequel to Ryan Coogler's 2015 film, Creed. Stallone has been a busy man of late, getting his band of movie mercenaries back together for The Expendables 4 and steadily building anticipation for sequel to Creed – which earned the venerable actor-filmmaker a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for reprising his legendary role as Rocky Balboa 39 years after he was first nominated for a Best Actor for Rocky.
In the first Creed, Adonis Johnson (Michael B. Jordan) found a spiritual reconnection with the father he never knew – the late boxing champ Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) – and followed in his footsteps to the boxing ring with the help of Apollo's foe-turned-friend, Rocky. Now, in the sequel to the film, it appears as though Adonis is looking to settle an old score with the son of Russian fighter Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren), who brutally killed Apollo in the ring in what was supposed to be an exhibition match. Following the casting last month of real-life Romanian boxer Florian “Big Nasty” Munteanu as Drago's son and word from Jordan that filming would soon get underway for Creed II, Stallone has given fans a fan-made poster featuring the core cast for the film.
Stallone revealed the first (non-theatrical) poster for Creed II in a new Instagram post. This poster for the sequel, which is titled with Roman numerals, features a split image of Munteanu and Jordan in the foreground, with full images of Lundgren and Stallone standing behind them. Stallone tagged the post with the words and hashtags "Fight time ... #creed 2 #healthylifestyle #rockybalboa1976." Take a look:
The poster is definitely a blast from the past for fans of Rocky IV, which featured the Rocky/Apollo/Drago storyline in 1985. Even though they were enemies in the film, Rocky IV created a long-standing friend and working relationship between Stallone and Lundgren, who's appeared in all three of Stallone's Expendables movies so far and will presumably appear in The Expendables 4 as well.
In the meantime, fans can only hope that Creed II will find the momentum going for the rebooted Rocky franchise, which undoubtedly benefited by taking the main focus off of Rocky and placing it on Creed's son, to give viewers a breath of fresh air. This first poster will surely excite fans even more for the sequel, and with any luck, director Steven Caple Jr. can find the right punch combination that Coogler (Black Panther) did as the helmer of first Creed film to make this follow-up a winner.
