Syfy renews Van Helsing for season 5, which will be the fantasy drama's final season. Van Helsing follows the story of Vanessa Van Helsing (Kelly Overton), descendant of the famed vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing, on her fight against vampires who have taken over the world. Due to her unique blood profile, Vanessa is able to turn vampires back into humans. This makes her a threat to the vampires and gives humanity a fighting chance at survival.

In last week's penultimate episode of season 4, titled "Three Pages," Hansen shares his memories with Jack and Violet. This leads them to go into the Dark Realm to kill the Dark One himself, Dracula. Van Helsing has had an explosive fourth season, which delved further into the lore within the show's universe. This arc of the story will conclude with the season 4 finale airing this Friday, December 20.

According to THR, Syfy announced the renewal of the series ahead of Friday's season 4 finale. The fifth season of Van Helsing will consist of 13 episodes which will air sometime in 2020 and will also be the final season of the show. The exact air date has not yet been announced. Executive producer Chad Oakes has stated, "We are thrilled to be able to bring the amazing Van Helsing saga to a close." Oakes then thanked the cast, crew, Syfy, Netflix, and Super Ecran, the Canadian television network that distributes the show in Quebec, for making it all possible. Daniel March, a managing partner at Dynamic Television, shared that he is "excited to end the show on its own terms" and is also excited for the chance to give the story, characters, and fans "the conclusion they so richly deserve.

While Van Helsing may have gotten the green light for a season 5 to wrap up the storylines from the first four seasons, there are plenty of shows that cannot say the same. Syfy's Krypton, a Superman prequel series, was cancelled earlier this year after only two seasons. A potential Krypton spin-off titled Lobo was also passed on by Syfy. Deadly Class was also cancelled after its freshman season earlier this year, and it was joined by the cancellation of Happy! after its second season.

While hardcore fans of Van Helsing may be disappointed that their favorite show is ending in one more season, it's clear that many of the people involved with the show are grateful they get to end the show on their own terms. Television cancellations are a sad reality in the industry, and it can be a blessing today to be able to prepare for it ahead of time. Five seasons may not seem like a very long run, but it's still more than many shows get. And like any great show, Van Helsing will live on with the fans well past its original run.
