While the manga Sword Art Online thrusts characters into an MMORPG where they must fight to survive, a new manga Movies Are Real revolves around a movie actor who gets transported from movie sets to the actual places that are being portrayed as fictional every time the director yells, "Action!"

Sword Art Online resonates with so many fans because all of the players who are trapped inside the eponymous game can die as they try to escape, which can only be accomplished by defeating the boss at the top of a 100-level tower. In Movies Are Real, extra actor Ki Man Sung experiences what the title of the manga suggests every time the director starts filming: The movie becomes real until the director yells "Cut!" The problem is that he's been casted for a historical war drama, and the first scene transpires on a battlefield. So when fellow actors start dying around him, Ki is understandably terrified and doesn't hide it.

Ironically, Ki gets noticed for what everyone believes to be his incredible acting skills, even though he's not really acting, but actually expressing true terror. This bizarre misunderstanding soon thrusts Ki Man Sung into more prominent roles, which all would have been incredible opportunities had they happened under normal circumstances, except violent things are always supposed to befall his characters and, in turn, Ki the actor. First, he's promoted to a minor yet crucial character in the aforementioned war drama that requires him to experience more traumatizing things: He's now a soldier whose life ends up getting ruined after he's captured and tortured by the enemy. Next, he's recruited by a well-known movie studio where his first role is a man who is killed by a serial killer after being stabbed repeatedly.

Movies Are Real stands out from the many other series of its kind, like the anime Sword Art Online, in part because Ki has the power of choice when other protagonists don't. Ki can choose not to act, which would, in turn, prevent him from getting transported to dangerous places. And yet, Ki has always dreamed of becoming a real actor instead of being what is essentially a human prop. So he's willing to risk his life to pursue his dream. And because he's new to the industry, Ki doesn't have the luxury of choosing what kind of movies in which he stars.

Ki must first endure whatever films the studio chooses before he can pick what movies he wants. As of now, the only options he has are violent movies that put him in dangerous situations that are detrimental to his physical and mental wellbeing. This unique predicament in Movies Are Real adds an exciting, new dynamic to a genre that Sword Art Online originally popularized, but that this new manga is now revolutionizing.
