On Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack's release day, disappointed Nintendo 64 players were quick to point out input lag and more technical issues in Switch versions of games like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of TimeSuper Mario 64, and Mario Kart 64. Nintendo Switch Online's new $50 Expansion Pack subscription tier comes with access to Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis games, complete with online multiplayer support and other perks in some titles. The new premium price has been roundly criticized online since its reveal, and NSO + Expansion Pack went live on October 25.

Nintendo 64 games have been ported and emulated officially on Nintendo consoles multiple times over the years, with some of the most familiar versions being emulated N64 classics on the Wii and Wii U Virtual Console services. However, some of these games were criticized at the time for high input lag, glitches, and other deviations that made them technically inferior to their twenty-year-old originals. Unlike the emulated Super Mario 3D All-Stars remaster collection, the Virtual Console and Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack versions of these retro games are direct ports intended to run just as they do on a real Nintendo 64.

Some Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers aren't impressed with the states of some Switch N64 games. A video shared on Twitter by speedrunner Toufool pointed out on Twitter that Super Mario 64's input lag was "hot garbage" despite its faithful visuals. Toufool followed up the complaint with a video demonstrating The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time's own input lag, showing their Nintendo Switch Pro controller and TV screen in real-time for reference. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time speedrunner zfg echoed this evidence, concluding that "[Ocarina of Time] on Switch is so bad it might actually be worse than [Wii U Virtual Console's version]," a remark which carries considerable weight given their renown in the game's speedrunning community. However, Toufool clarified in a later tweet that Switch N64 game input lag varies by title, as Mario Tennis allegedly has considerably less lag.

In addition to the input lag complaints, there have been criticisms leveled at the online functionality and connectivity in games like Mario Kart 64. A video shared by Twitter user kirbolotl shows a 3-player Mario Kart 64 race seeming to suffer from severe lag, but it's less clear if examples like these could be more closely tied to individual clients' internet connections and speeds.

While the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack costs $10 less per year than PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold, these videos have bolstered criticisms of the new subscription tier's $50 price. The Nintendo Switch Online expansion is twice as expensive as the base NSO subscription price and lacks multiple common features offered by similar services. Although it offers NES, SNES, and Sega Genesis games in addition to its new N64 library, the addition of more (ideally newer) titles could help better justify the new price tag for some players.

Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is off to a rough start, and player complaints don't seem to have slowed since yesterday. It's unknown if or when Nintendo will patch out the issues players have identified at press time.
