With Sweet Tooth season 2 set to drop on Netflix at some point this year, theories have already begun about what to expect from the new season and the comics could hint at the answers. Sweet Tooth is a fantasy television series based on comics by Jeff Lemire which follows a young deer-boy hybrid, Gus, trying to find his mother in a world taken over by a pandemic. Sweet Tooth season 1 ended with a variety of secrets coming to light and many lives at stake, so season 2 is highly anticipated.

Although Sweet Tooth has a wondrous and fantastical ambiance on-screen, the source material is much darker and scarier. Jeff Lemire's Sweet Tooth comics include disturbing villains, explicit violence, and less-than-healthy relationships. In Netflix's version, these characteristics are softened and colorized to make for a much more kid-friendly Sweet Tooth that is unlike the comics.

This change in moods from comics to television is definitely dramatic but overall, hasn't altered the original plot too significantly. Therefore, it's possible to predict what will occur in Sweet Tooth season 2 from the original comic books.

Gus Will Gain Independence in Sweet Tooth Season 2

Sweet Tooth Episode 1 Gus

At the end of Sweet Tooth season 1, Gus finds himself trapped at the Preserve by General Abbot along with a group of other hybrid children. Although the circumstances are bad, the situation isn't a complete failure because Gus finds a family among the other hybrids, which he has never experienced before. The finale infers that Gus and the other hybrids will join together and find a way out of the Preserve.

According to Lemire's comics, this theory seems pretty solid. However in the time between Gus entering the Preserve and his eventual escape, another plot point will most likely happen. In the Sweet Tooth comics, Gus' introduction to Abbot reveals to him the horrors of experimentation on hybrids and confirms the seriousness of their situation. In this way, Gus becomes motivated to escape the Preserve. Though the hybrid experiments will likely be lessened in the TV series, Gus will likely still find a sense of independence based on the reality of Abbot's intentions. Because he's away from Jepperd and surrounded by other children who need help, perhaps Gus will come forward as a leader in Sweet Tooth season 2. He will no longer be a child that depends on adults but a leader seeking help from others.

Jepperd And Aimee Will Form An Army

While Gus is taken captive at the Preserve, Aimee finds Jepperd, still wounded by the Last Men, and brings him back to her hideout. When Jepperd wakes up, Aimee informs him that together, they will save the hybrid children from Abbot, no matter the cost. Sweet Tooth season 2 will most definitely see Jepperd and Aimee proving this declaration correct and this loosely aligns with the events of the comics as well.

After Gus is captured in the Sweet Tooth comics, Jepperd decides to form an army with the intention of breaking Gus out. Although the series adds Aimee to the equation, this plot point could very well happen in Sweet Tooth season 2. Jepperd and Aimee may try and recruit others to help them take down Abbot, or even have the entire army be just the two of them, armed and ready to fight. This could also provide an opportunity for characters like Jimmy to return.

It's likely the hybrid children will also have escape plans of their own in Sweet Tooth season 2. In fact, they may even have help from Dr. Singh, who finds himself even more against experimenting on the hybrids when he realizes Gus can talk in Sweet Tooth season 1. According to the comics, Gus and the other hybrid children try to make their escape from the Preserve on their own and this seems likely to occur in the series as well, especially if Gus becomes the leader of the group. Though this storyline would diverge from the comics, it makes sense for the direction the television series is going in.

Jepperd Will Meet Dr. Singh And His Son in Sweet Tooth Season 2

With the escape of the hybrid children seemingly inevitable in Sweet Tooth season 2, it would make sense that Jepperd and Aimee, Gus, and Dr. Singh will all converge. Lemire wrote several moments in the comics where Jepperd, Gus, and Singh work together to understand the Great Crumble, but their relationship may form sooner in the television series. Similar to the comics though, there will likely be tension between the characters because of Dr. Singh's backstory in Sweet Tooth and connections to Abbot and his hybrid experiments.

Though this doesn't occur in Lemire's comics, Sweet Tooth season 2 may reunite Jepperd and his son as well. At the end of season 1, it is revealed that Jepperd had a wife and hybrid son who disappeared at the precipice of the pandemic. Later, when Gus is brought to the Preserve, one of the hybrid children looks to be a black sheep hybrid, which is what Jepperd's son was. This small detail points to the idea that Jepperd could meet his son in Sweet Tooth season 2 and not even realize it.

Gus And The Hybrids Will Explore an Abandoned Mall

One issue of the Sweet Tooth comic that stood out upon release was a story in which Gus and the other hybrids explore an abandoned mall from before the Great Crumble. Although this portion of the comics may not be especially vital to the series' plot, it may still appear in the television series as an homage to Lemire's story and comics. It would provide some background to the world before the Great Crumble and certainly make for a potentially visually pleasing episode. It could also add to the optimism of the television series if the hybrids are shown having fun in the mall and enjoying a moment to just exist as children.

Gus Will Prepare To Go To Alaska in Sweet Tooth Season 2

Sweet Tooth cast

The biggest revelation among many at the end of Sweet Tooth season 1 is that Gus' mother is alive and in Alaska. Though Gus becomes captured at the Preserve, and is separated from Jepperd, his ultimate goal remains the same at the ending of Sweet Tooth season 1: find his mother. This motive will most likely return in Sweet Tooth season 2. It occurs in the comics as well, when Gus, Jepperd, and Dr. Singh prepare a trip to Alaska to discover a cure for the Great Crumble and a reason for the hybrid children's births. With the added element of finding Gus' mother along with the cure, it is inevitable that Gus will want to go to Alaska as soon as he is free of Abbot.

It is unclear when Sweet Tooth season 2 will come to Netflix but, in the meantime, Lemire's comics are a good source for theorizing what could be next for Gus, Jepperd, and Sweet Tooth's large array of characters. Questions are sure to be answered and characters will be reunited to achieve their overarching goals. However, even with the source material at hand, there's a good chance that Sweet Tooth showrunners will leave big surprises and changes in the latest season as well. So, viewers should still be prepared for the unexpected when it comes to Sweet Tooth season 2.
