Netflix's post-apocalyptic fable Sweet Tooth ends its first season on a major cliffhanger, and at long last Sweet Tooth season 2 updates are on the way. Based on the Vertigo comics by Jeff Lemire, Sweet Tooth had a long road to the screen, but it ended up as a big success, with a Rotten Tomatoes 97 percent critics score, with a high 87 percent audience score. The good news is that there will be a second season of the show coming to Netflix. Sweet Tooth stars Christian Convery as Gus, one of the first generation of children who were mysteriously born as "hybrids" — part human, part animal.

As the hybrids began to be born, the previous model of humanity was killed off en masse by the arrival of a lethal and highly contagious virus. A decade later, hybrid children are hunted down and killed or captured for experimentation, but Gus chooses to brave the world outside his woodland home to search for his mother, with the help of wanderer Tommy Jepperd (Nonso Anozie). Sweet Tooth has plenty of twists and turns coming if it follows the Lemire comic book storyline, so Netflix has some big Sweet Tooth season 2 updates for fans.

Sweet Tooth season 2 updates revealed it will arrive on Netflix on April 27, 2023. Netflix renewed Sweet Tooth for a second season in July 2021. This was a quick renewal, as the fantasy series developed by Jim Mickle hit Netflix in June 2021. It was clear that the streaming giant was happy with both the reviews and the streaming numbers for the comic book adaptation. Some more Sweet Tooth season 2 updates arrived before Netflix released the first season, as Vertigo released a prequel comic book series called Sweet Tooth: The Return. This means that the original comic book narrative might not be the end of the show.

Sweet Tooth Season 2 Cast

Sweet Tooth features many young cast members, so will have to allow for a passage of time with so long between seasons, similar to Stranger Things. With that said, Sweet Tooth season 2 updates indicate that Christian Convery will return as Gus while Nonso Anozie will be back as his erstwhile protector, Tommy Jesper. Also returning will be Adeel Akhtar as Dr. Singh and Neil Sandilands as General Abbot, two of the antagonists of the Sweet Tooth cast.

Stefania LaVie Owen will be back as Bear, a teenager who founded the Animal Army. While not a hybrid, she is an ally who saves the hybrid children from those wanting to hurt them. Dania Ramierz will be back as Aimee Eden, a woman who attempted to run a safe haven for hybrids. After appearing in the Sweet Tooth season 1 final scene, Naledi Murray is back as Birdie, the woman who Gus believes is his birth mother. There is no word on whether season 2 will have any flashbacks with Will Forte as Pubba. James Brolin will possibly also be back as the narrator.

There are also some new characters coming to Sweet Tooth season 2. Finn Fox, Wally Walrus, Haley Mockingbird, and JoJo Cat will join the colorful cast of characters. The actors for these roles remain unknown, but producers were looking "for talented kids who may be deaf, hearing-impaired HOH and kids versed in NZSL Sign Language." Amie Donald, who had a breakout in M3gan in 2023 signed on to play Maya Monkey. Kiri-Rose Kendall joined the series as well as a character named Twyla. Other newcomers include Nigel Godfrey, Caden Dragomer, Craig Hall, and Enroll Shand.

There came a major Sweet Tooth season 2 update around the story, as the official logline for the 8 episode long adventure has been released by Netflix (via TVline). The full synopsis of what's to come in the new season of Sweet Tooth is as follows:

As a deadly new wave of the Sick bears down, Gus (Christian Convery) and a band of fellow hybrids are held prisoner by General Abbot (Neil Sandilands) and the Last Men. Looking to consolidate power by finding a cure, Abbot uses the children as fodder for the experiments of captive Dr. Aditya Singh (Adeel Akhtar), who’s racing to save his infected wife Rani (Aliza Vellani). To protect his friends, Gus agrees to help Dr. Singh, beginning a dark journey into his origins and his mother Birdie’s (Amy Seimetz) role in the events leading up to The Great Crumble.

Season 1 already gave some hints for Sweet Tooth season 2. Things didn't look great for Gus and the other hybrid children at the end of the finale. Captured by General Abbott, they were last seen waiting to be vivisected in Dr. Singh's search for a cure. Nonetheless, the season ends with hope as Gus finally finds the family he's been searching for. Dr. Singh is struggling with the ethics of killing hybrid children in order to find a way to help Rani, so Sweet Tooth season 2 could see Gus convincing the doctor to turn against Abbott and help the children escape.

Sweet Tooth also has the promise of rescue from Aimee, who has teamed up with Tommy and declared a firm intention to get both of their kids back. The mystery of the hybrid children's origins and the seeds of the sickness have been partially uncovered, but there's still plenty more to learn. The ending of Sweet Tooth season 1 also revealed that Birdie is in Alaska, where the microbes used to create Gus and the virus was originally found. With Bear now in contact with Birdie, Gus could finally get the chance to learn the real truth about where he comes from in Sweet Tooth season 2.

Sweet Tooth Season 2 Trailer

Sweet Tooth Season 2 Gus Looking Through Bars

Netflix dropped a teaser trailer for Sweet Tooth season 2 in late March. The teaser showcases a number of significant story beats from the upcoming season, including Gus stepping up to take a leadership position among the last men, and Dr. Singh continuing his hideous experimentation. Arriving with just over a month to go until the premier, the teaser has already reminded viewers that Sweet Tooth season 2 is on the way and one to look forward to — regardless of how long has passed since season 1 concluded.

A second trailer was also released heading into the new season. The new trailer has a little more hopeful note than the first one, and it starts off with a monologue from what appears to be Gus's mother, talking about how badly she wants to find him. There is no word on if she is talking to Gus or not. Fans of the comic know this might not be exactly what it seems though. The rest of the trailer shows the dangers and the reason to worry about Gus and his friends, with hunters seeking out the hybrid children and either capturing them or killing them. With the new Sweet Tooth season 2 updates, it seems like the new season will be more dangerous than ever.
