The fantastical apocalypse series based on comics by Jeff Lemire released its first season in 2021 and is expected to air Sweet Tooth season 2 in 2023. Following a pandemic called the Great Crumble and the sudden appearance of child-animal hybrids, the show tells the story of a deer-boy hybrid named Gus and his quest to find his mother.Sweet Tooth's season 1 finale left a variety of loose ends that could easily be picked up and answered in season 2. With new discoveries being made and characters being separated or put in tough situations, there is a lot of mystery about what will happen next.

Although the questions vary from big and important - like Gus's mother's location- to subtler details -like Jimmy's fight with the Last Men - all are storylines that could potentially lead into the upcoming season.

What Is Birdie Doing In Alaska?

Sweet Tooth cast

One of the most pressing questions posed by Sweet Tooth season 1 is the whereabouts of Gus's mother, Birdie. Throughout the series, Gus travels alongside Jepperd, and eventually Bear, the leader of Sweet Tooth's Animal Army, to Colorado where he hopes to find his mother. Instead, he finds her colleague, Judy, who explains that Birdie left long ago to try and find Gus and his guardian Pubba. However, Bear finds a satellite phone which she uses to call Birdie who is in Alaska.

The most obvious reason for Birdie's location is that Alaska houses the research center in which the microbes that produced the hybrids and H5G9 virus were found. However, that doesn't explain why, when Birdie was meant to be looking for Gus, she ended up in Alaska. Some potential explanations could be that she's trying to find a cure for the virus or continuing her original research which resulted in Gus's existence. Overall, this storyline is almost sure to be answered in Sweet Tooth season 2.

What Happened To Jepperd’s Wife & Child In Sweet Tooth?

Jeppard traveling through the mountains

Another mystery that arises in Sweet Tooth season 1 has to do with Jepperd's wife and hybrid child whom he lost right at the start of the Great Crumble. Shown in flashbacks, the pandemic is right at its start and Jepperd's wife goes into labor, giving birth to a goat-boy hybrid. Horrified by this unexpected change, Jepperd walks away from his family in order to think, but when he returns he finds them gone.

Jepperd's story raises a serious question about what happened to his wife and son. As the series has portrayed, many hybrids suffered in the new world at the hands of poachers or found solace with their guardians or other hybrids. If Jepperd's wife did not succumb to H5G9, then his family definitely could have survived the Great Crumble, but then why wouldn't they try to find Jepperd later on? The fate of Jepperd's family is a particularly hazy mystery that will hopefully get some answers in season 2.

Will Dr. Singh Continue His Research In Sweet Tooth Season 2?

Dr. Aditya in the hospital in Sweet Tooth season 1.

A particularly precarious situation that audiences were left with at the end of season 1 was Dr. Singh's capture by the Last Men. Forced to make a cure for the H5G9 virus, Dr. Singh must either experiment on unwilling hybrids or face the lethal consequences of his captors. Therefore, this makes viewers wonder what he will do. Will he forgo his morals to not only stay alive but also find a cure, or will he fight back to preserve the safety of the hybrids in Sweet Tooth season 2?

How Did Sweet Tooth's Bear & Wendy Get Separated?

Sweet Tooth Bear

Jepperd isn't the only character with a story of an estranged family. At the end of Sweet Tooth season 1, Bear has a memory that reveals that Wendy, Aimee's surrogate daughter, is Bear's long-lost sister. Similar to Jepperd's story, this revelation brings up several questions about how the sisters were separated.

While some hybrids were lucky enough to have a loving guardian raise them, it is possible that Bear and Wendy did not have this since Bear ended up in the Animal Army and Wendy was left as a baby. Their storyline may delve deeper into the idea of hybrids who were abandoned by their caretakers and had to fend for themselves. This type of storyline would definitely be an interesting area of the show to explore further, especially since Gus's storyline as a deer hybrid has shown only one side of hybrid life.

Did Jimmy Survive The Last Men?

General Abbott of The Last Men on Sweet Tooth

Jimmy was a Sweet Tooth season 1 character that appeared for a short time but impacted the plot and characters. When Gus, Jepperd, and Bear are attempting to sneak onto a train to Colorado, a security guard tries to stop them but as it turns out, the guard is Jimmy, Jepperd's old friend from his football team. The two reunite and Jimmy agrees to help them get to Colorado, even risking his life to fight off the Last Men so that the gang could escape.

The last the audience sees of Jimmy is him fighting with the Last Men, and he isn't doing well. Could he escape the Last Men or do they kill him? Or, perhaps the Last Men take him captive for their own causes or potentially introduce him to a more brutal Sweet Tooth villain. Either way, it seems likely that Jimmy could be alive in Sweet Tooth season 2 and will return at a time of need or in a more negative scenario, be used against the main characters by the Last Men.

Sweet Tooth S2 Must Reveal How The Great Crumble & Hybrids Are Connected

Sweet Tooth Baby Wendy

Of all the questions offered by Sweet Tooth season 1, the most pressing is how the Great Crumble and the hybrids are connected. In season 1, Bear learns from Judy that the pandemic and the hybrids are the two sides of the same coin, however, the details of this metaphor aren't explained. If the show decides to bring Birdie back from Alaska, there's a chance this question could get an answer or at least come closer to one. By learning how the two are related, the tension and prejudice that infects the Sweet Tooth world would decrease and perhaps, a cure could be made.

Sweet Tooth is so unlike the comics that it can be hard to see what comes next, especially when so many answers are on the line. Various questions still linger about the series' world and characters, and may still linger for a while. However, with the release of Sweet Tooth season 2, hopes are high that some answers are definitely going to be given.
