Warning: This post has spoilers for Sweet Girl.

Here's everything we know about a potential Sweet Girl 2. Starring the DCEU's Aquaman Jason Momoa, and directed by Brian Andrew Mendoza, Sweet Girl has shrugged off low critical ratings to connect with audiences on Netflix. Buoyed by Momoa's action credentials, and boasting one of the most intriguing final stage twists of any recent action movie, it's undoubtedly a talking point of Netflix's original movie releases. But will it get a follow-up?

Sweet Girl follows the Cooper family in the wake of the death of mother Amanda, for which her husband Ray (Momoa) blames BioPrime, a big pharma company. From there, Ray cuts a bloody swathe of revenge, seeking to take down those who condemned his wife and left him and his daughter lost in a life of turmoil. Then, in one of the most genuinely shocking final act twists - reminiscent of an M Night Shyamalan twist, in fact - it's revealed that Ray was killed early in the movie and the angel of vengeance has in fact been Rachel (Isabela Merced) the whole time. Talk about unexpected.

While the ending of Sweet Girl wraps up the central story quite definitively, there is certainly potential for more, even bringing Jason Momoa back as Rachel's imagined persona, to help her pull off her missions. Expanding the heart of the narrative may prove tricky, but if the film makes enough money - you have to suspect Netflix will explore the possibilities of Sweet Girl 2. Here's all we know about it.

Will Sweet Girl 2 Happen?

Sweet Girl Netflix

Sweet Girl 2 has not yet been greenlit, but it has hit the top of the global charts for the streamer since its release and that success continued beyond the first weekend, suggesting at least some longevity. That will be key in Netflix's decision on whether to make a follow-up, as it always is. The other factors involved tend to be social reactions, which Sweet Girl's Jason Momoa twist certainly captured the attention of. For his part, director Mendoza says he would return "in a heartbeat" were a sequel to be optioned. The early numbers - even with a comparatively low review score - look promising, and actions like this and Chris Hemsworth's Extraction do tend to do well on the platform.

Sweet Girl 2 Cast: Will Jason Momoa Return?

Jason Momoa Sweet Girl

The twist that Jason Momoa's Ray was killed two years before the majority of SweetGirl's events may seem to rule him out of a return, but there's no saying that Rachel wouldn't continue her emotional protection through the projection of her father. That would mean, as long as she was in "full flight", Momoa could still be used. Or he could shift to a companion figure. Or there could be another huge twist that he was never actually killed. More likely is the return of Isabela Merced as Rachel, since this is all now her story. She's already spoken of her desire to return for Sweet Girl 2:

"Like maybe there’s going to be a sequel, hopefully there’s time for more action. But like I really hope it’s soon and with the same stunt team, because they were just absolutely amazing and made everything so much fun. I haven’t had so much fun doing my own stunts ever."

The continuation of Rachel's fury at the monetization of healthcare - which Merced has said should always be railed against - could provide further opportunity to expand on her mission of vengeance. But more interesting, arguably, and the easiest way to bring back Momoa, would be to heed Merced's own desire for a story. She told ScreenRant that Sweet Girl 2 should be a prequel;

"I think it creates an amazing story, and it has potential for having a sequel be about the backstory. How did she get to this point where she's so psychologically messed up from the trauma that she's endured that she has to pretend to be [something else]?"
