New images from Swan Song reveal a first look at Mahershala Ali's upcoming film. The two-time Academy Award-winning actor first gained recognition for his roles in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and the last two films in The Hunger Games series. This led to roles in the Netflix series Luke Cage and House of Cards. Ali's first Oscar came in 2016 for his performance in Moonlight, followed by 2018's Green Book, both of which also won Best Picture.

Ali's next performance will be in the Apple TV+ film, Swan Song, which is also garnering some Oscar buzz. From up-and-coming filmmaker Benjamin Cleary, Swan Song follows a loving father and husband, portrayed by Ali, who is diagnosed with a terminal illness. As the film is set in the near future, his character is presented with a controversial alternative solution, which involves replacing himself with a carbon copy clone. The film also stars Ali's Moonlight co-star Naomie Harris along with Glenn Close, Awkwafina, and Adam Beach.

Now, Apple TV+ has released a few images from Swan Song, the first of which shows Ali's character, Cameron, and his wife, Poppy (Harris). Awkwafina's character, Kate, who appears to be a close friend of Cameron's, is also showcased, along with Glenn Close's character, who is Cameron's doctor. The last picture provides another look at Ali in the film, although based on his clothes and expression, it appears to be the version of Cameron that was copied to help shield his family from grief. These images provide a nice first look at the film's impressive cast, which includes a slew of actors recently nominated for Academy Awards. Awkwafina is also coming off her biggest performance yet in Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Though Swan Song has a lot going for it other than its star-studded cast. It appears to be a heart-wrenching drama that will also ponder the ethics of its advanced sci-fi technology.

With films like Swan Song, Apple TV+ is clearly gunning for a big showing at next year's Academy Awards. They also recently released the Sundance hit CODA and have another potential awards season contender in Tom Hanks' Finch lined up for a release this November, while Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon is also in the works. Mahershala Ali's Swan Song can now be added to this list of anticipated titles for Apple TV+ as it releases on December 17.
