According to a new rumor, DC’s Swamp Thing streaming series may cast Jason Voorhees actor Derek Mears in the role of the creature. Swamp Thing is set to star Crystal Reed as Abby Arcane, a CDC investigator who travels to her old home town of Houma, Louisiana to look into a mysterious virus. But her investigation leads her to discover something even stranger and potentially more horrifying lurking in the swamps.

Underworld director Len Wiseman is set to helm the Swamp Thing pilot, after a previous rumor that said James Wan and Deran Sarafian would handle those duties. Gary Dauberman and Mark Verheiden wrote the script, based on original characters created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson. Swamp Thing previously received the feature film treatment back in 1982, and there was also a TV series version that aired on USA Network from 1990-1993.

According to Splash Report, Swamp Thing is set to cast Derek Mears in the role of the titular creature. Importantly, Mears will only be playing the creature, and not the human, Alec Holland, who eventually turns into the creature, a humanoid made of vegetable matter who despite his horrifying appearance is really a good guy just trying to defend his swamp home against threats both human and supernatural. There is as yet no confirmation on this report, so it remains firmly in the rumor category for now.

A noted stunt performer, Mears has also taken on multiple credited roles on television and in movies, appearing mainly in horror films, including the 2009 reboot of Friday the 13th, where he donned the iconic hockey mask and played Jason Voorhees. Mears also appeared in Hatchet III alongside fan-favorite Jason actor Kane Hodder. On the TV side, Mears has appeared in everything from The Flash to Sleepy Hollow to Twin Peaks. But perhaps his greatest TV role came when he played Troy and Abed's favorite superhero Kickpuncher on Community. Mears can next be seen in Adi Shankar's Gods and Secrets, as well as James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez's Alita: Battle Angel.

According to a recent character breakdown, Swamp Thing the TV series will focus on the “Shape of Water” romance between Abby and Swamp Thing/Alec Holland. The series also recently cast Maria Sten in the role of Liz Tremayne, a local newspaper reporter/bartender and old high school friend of Abby’s who seeks to protect her home town. Swamp Thing is set to premiere in 2019 on the new DC Universe streaming service.
