CW president Mark Pedowitz has revealed that he is not ruling out the possibility of Swamp Thing season 2. The series, which initially premiered on the DC Universe streaming platform in the summer of 2019, ran for just one season, getting canceled after only its first episode aired. The CW recently acquired the broadcast rights to Swamp Thing and plans to air the show's first season on the network in the fall of 2020. The show reportedly had a three-season plan in place before getting canceled by the network, another disheartening piece of news for the show's passionate fans.

Swamp Thing followed the story of Abby Arcane, a CDC researcher, who returns home to Louisiana to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus and forms a bond with a scientist named Alec Holland. Tragically, Holland is taken from her, but she realizes the swamp has mystical properties, leading her to believe the love of her life may not be dead after all. The series was developed by Mark Verheiden and Gary Dauberman, taking inspiration from Alan Moore's Swamp Thing run. The series starred Crystal Reed, Virginia Madsen, Andy Bean, Will Patton, Kevin Durand, and Derek Mears as the titular comic book character. Not only was the series' cancellation a blow to fans, but Swamp Thing season 1 left many questions unanswered.

According to ComicBook, CW president Mark Pedowitz has not ruled out a Swamp Thing season 2. When asked if there was going to be a second season, Pedowitz responded by saying, "At the moment, it's just the one season." He goes on to say, "I do not know if it would come back. Obviously, that would be a discussion for Warner Bros. and the CW. But at this time, Swamp Thing is just the episodes we have."

Swamp Thing Loose Ends Still

Not only were fans crushed by the show meeting its end so soon, but star Derek Mears was baffled by the series' early cancellation. Even executive producer James Wan expressed his disappointment and confusion, urging fans to watch Swamp Thing even after its cancellation. Though the series remains canceled, for now, fans have been wondering if the character will make the leap into other DC properties, such as the upcoming HBO Max Justice League Dark series. Swamp Thing also had a cameo in Crisis On Infinite Earths, the CW's massive superhero crossover event, confirming the character's presence in the Arrowverse, leaving things open for possible future appearances. The crossover event almost had Constantine and Swamp Thing team-up, but the idea was ultimately nixed.

Swamp Thing is a comic book character brimming with storytelling potential. Not only is he one of the more underrated characters, but there are a plethora of organic ways in which this iteration of the creature could branch off into other DC properties, raising his notoriety as a result. Though it was disappointing to see the series get axed before it could fully get its feet out of the swamp, it's encouraging to hear that CW president Pedowitz isn't entirely ruling out a second season. If the rerun of season 1 performs well on the network, it's not difficult to imagine that conversations may take place regarding a Swamp Thing season 2. In the meantime, fans can hope for the best and revisit Swamp Thing season 1 when it debuts on the CW this fall.
