Boston Rob has literally been named the 'godfather' of Survivorand it's pretty hard to have an extensive conversation about the social and strategic skills of this game without talking about Rob Mariano. With 5 seasons under his belt and a season as a mentor, every fan of this show knows his name.

He's definitely been behind some inventive tactics, some memorable moves, and powerful alliances. With one crown to show for it, Boston Rob has been deemed a fan favorite. Of course, no reality competition star comes without their critics, and sometimes, his title superseded his gameplay.

Went Too Far: His Confrontation Of His Alliance (Marquesas)

In his first season, Rob was definitely on the chopping block. He was a leader on his tribe, but his game got shaken up with a tribe swap. Rob was eager to confirm that his original alliance was still together, and ended up being pretty bossy.

With no real confirmation, Rob definitely lashed out to a bit of an extreme. It was the tribe's first tribal council, and it wasn't really a pretty look for Boston Rob's first season. Gabriel ended up going home, but Rob still told John that he was 'coming for him.'

Fan Favorite: Leading His Tribes

Rob immediately became a fan favorite because it was hard to ignore his leadership. When he was on the Rotu tribe in Marquesas, he was often the 'leader' or the caller on the tribe. He directed immunity challenge after challenge, and Rotu was on a streak.

Fans will also not forget early on in his first season when Rob was chosen for a tie-breaker against Neleh. He came out on top, and that was probably the first time fans knew he would be a game-changer. Beyond that, he was also chosen as the 'ambassador' for the merge, and from the start fans knew he was even Jeff's favorite. In his next seasons, Rob was always the 'caller' in challenges or the 'finisher' - and it always worked.

Went Too Far: His Show-Mances (Marquesas & All-Stars)

Survivor Boston Rob and Amber on Winners at War in the shelter.

Lovers of this show really don't like to talk about his short romance with Sarah in Marquesas, and he really did lead the permanent rule of the island: never get in a romance. Undoubtedly, he had a target on his back because of it.

While fans are also head over heels for Amber and Rob, it wasn't exactly the most beneficial thing on the island, or for fans watching at the time. He risked a lot for Amber, and actually ended up losing because of it. This doesn't make him a bad player or bad person, but fans wanted him to focus a bit more on his own game.

Fan Favorite: Challenge All-Star

There really is no argument against the fact that Rob is one of the best players to ever hit the beach when it comes to challenges. In All-Stars, he led the tribe to victory after victory, including puzzles, strength, and dexterity. He also went on in every other season to do the same.

With 9 total individual immunity wins in his career, this doesn't even begin to touch on his mastery in the tribe challenges. Often, the win is due to him, and he actually holds the record for most total individual immunities. On Redemption Island, he made it to the end largely due to the fact that they just couldn't vote him out at peak times.

Went Too Far: When He Turned On Lex (All-Stars)

Survivor's Boston Rob sitting on the beach

Rob asked a pretty big favor of Lex, and Lex was more than happy to oblige. When he was separated from Amber on two different tribes, he enlisted Lex to protect her, in exchange for his own protection from Rob.

However, at the next tribal council, after the merge, Rob planned on voting out Lex - and revealed he never really had any intention of keeping that promise. Kathy and Lex were upset that he was going back on his word, but it didn't matter, and Lex was voted out. This wasn't his most redeeming moment, to say the least.

Fan Favorite: His Plan To Vote Out The Villains (Heroes Vs. Villains)

Tyson Apostol definitely had better moments than the tribal council that led him to be voted out. Rob ended up on the villains tribe, and found himself in a balancing act with fellow villainous legends - Russell Hantz and Parvati Shallow.

Rob Mariano finally hatched a plan to flush Russell's idol AND get at least either Russell or Parvati out. This was a genius move and definitely proved his talents once again. Unfortunately, though, Russell convinced Tyson to change his vote - and he went home.

Went Too Far: Blindsiding Matt (Redemption Island)

Survivor Rob and his alliance on Redemption Island, walking down beach

Russell and Rob were two veterans that hit the beach this season. Rob, a player with experience, certainly didn't shy away from the role of the leader. With a huge target on his back, Rob made some impressive moves and strong alliances.

Despite it actually being a great move, Rob's deception and power was a bit difficult to watch. He was a puppeteer of Phillip, who he literally 'signaled' to during tribal council to direct his vote. Beyond that, he viciously betrayed Andrea and blindsided Matt. It was smart but supported the fact that he was on the villains' tribe his last season.

Fan Favorite: Finding The Idol (Redemption Island)

Redemption Island was the season where Rob's skills and intelligence really all came together. On day 9, Rob found the idol - and managed to keep it a total secret. He tricked his tribe by distracting them, and his plan even held up that tribal council.

It that wasn't impressive enough, Rob even replaced a NEW hidden idol clue with his old one, in a brilliant and successful attempt to fool Grant. And when Phillip decided to call him out for having a clue, Rob used it against him and tipped the tribe back in his own favor. Frankly, it was entirely genius.

Went Too Far: The Buddy System (Winners At War)

Survivor's Adam, Jeremy, and Rob sitting at camp

This strange tactic was widely used by Boston Rob throughout his seasons, but it definitely didn't work when he tried it on veteran players - and winners. When he found himself on a tribe with Sarah, Adam, and Ben, he did everything he could to minimize their discussions.

With the buddy system, no one could leave or wander off. It was actually hysterical for fans to watch, but it was definitely one reason that pointed to his arrogance and is one reason why some viewers aren't a fan.

Fan Favorite: His & Parvati's Alliance (Winners At War)

Survivor Ethan, Rob, and Parvati talking on Winners at War

Winners at War very quickly became a 'new school vs. old school' kind of season. Rob and Parvati are some of the best players to ever hit the beach, and their old-school alliance was both totally wholesome and absolutely brilliant.

They played the game with a fun attitude, but these two also planned some genius strategies that kept viewers on the edge of their seats and the other castaways on their toes. From turning the tables on Adam to staying strong in challenges and alliances - Boston Rob left the island a winner in the hearts of fans.
