NBC's workplace comedy Superstore season 5 premieres this September, and here's everything we know about the return. The series, created by Justin Spitzer, premiered in 2015, and has gone from strength to strength with critics and viewers. The ensemble cast is headlined by America Ferrara, Ben Feldman, Lauren Ash, Colton Dunn, and Mark McKinney.
Superstore follows a group of employees working at "Cloud 9," a fictional big-box store near St. Louis, Missouri. As Amy (Ferrara), Jonah (Feldman), Garrett (Dunn), and the other Cloud 9 employees must deal with the issues caused by customers on a regular basis, they are also tasked with having the world's most positive manger in Glenn Sturgis (McKinney). He, along with the strict assistant manager Dina (Ash), make for some tense disagreements within the workplace.
Hilarity and hijinks often ensue within Cloud 9 as a way to attract customers, but Superstore never hesitates to focus on issues plaguing today's world. After Amy received no health benefits during her pregnancy, she sought a more prominent role within the company to fight for employee rights. Amy took over as store manager in Superstore season 4 after Glenn stepped down to become a floor worker. It looks as though Superstore season 5 will continue moving in this direction, using the comedy as a backdrop to commentary on social issues.
Superstore Season 5 Release Date
Superstore was renewed for season 5 back in March. The new season will premiere on Thursday, September 26 at 8 pm EST on NBC, launching the new NBC comedy block that also includes Perfect Harmony, The Good Place, and Sunnyside. Superstore has held that Thursday night timeslot since season 2 (when the series debuted during November 2015, it aired on Mondays). Superstore season 5 will presumably consist of 22 episodes as was the case with previous installments.
Superstore Season 5 Story Details
Superstore season 5 could have a bit of a different feel when it returns in September. Series creator Justin Spitzer stepped down as showrunner before the new episodes went into development, with executive producers Gabe Miller and Jonathan Green serve as the co-showrunners for season 5.
Toward the end of Superstore season 4, Sandra started to gain momentum with her efforts to form a union. As the new manager at Cloud 9, Amy tried to diffuse the tension among employees but failed miserably. The union rumors made their way to the corporate office which hinted that store 1217 could be considered as the location set to close. To make matters worse, Mateo (Nico Santos) was taken by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for being undocumented. Cloud 9's corporate office actually tipped off ICE about Mateo's status. It was at this moment that Amy and the rest of the Cloud 9 employees decided to officially unionize.
The fate of Cloud 9 store 1217 will hang in the balance in Superstore season 5. Mateo's uncertain future will also undoubtedly take center stage as his co-workers fight against his unlawful treatment at the hands of corporate. Amy has a lot to lose as she was just promoted to manager, but the money isn't as important as she first thought. Actress Kaliko Kauahi, who plays Sandra in the series, has also been bumped up to a series regular in season 5.
