CW's The Winchesters has finally given fans the chance to return to the world of Supernatural. Lately, fans have been more than thrilled to see little more than Winchesters saving people and hunting things again, even without the high stakes of Supernatural.Yet there is one major element that the show is missing: The relationship between Sam and Dean. After all, the bond between the brothers carried the show. Without it, The Winchesters just isn't ringing as true to fans. That's why they've been making some excellent tweets about Sam and Dean.

10 Protector and Protected

When Sam was a little boy, Dean was obsessed with protecting him. Their father made it clear that Dean needed to be responsible for Sam. It was one of the worst things to happen to Dean, as he felt like he could never keep Sam safe the way he needed to.

He spent the rest of his life feeling an obligation to keep Sam safe, even valuing that over his own security. It was a tragic reality for Dean, even if he never realized it. It was also tragic for Sam, who was never given much independence.

9 Never Had Their Father's Support

John Winchester was a horrible father, and there are few things as clear in Supernatural. Between abandoning his children multiple times and refusing to come to their rescue when they needed him, it was evident that John never really cared about them.

Early on, everything in their lives was about the Yellow-Eyed Demon. If they couldn't kill him, their lives were pointless. Mary's death was one of the most heartbreaking separations in Supernatural, because it convinced John to view his children as weapons.

8 Sam Was Somewhat Independent

While Dean spent his entire life looking after Sam, the younger Sam wasn't exactly coddled. After all, Dean spent a lot of time either mocking Sam or teaching him how to care about himself. One thing about Dean that aged poorly is that he expected Sam to become a hunter, to the point where he gave him no other options.

Because of that, Sam needed to learn to become self-sufficient almost as quickly as Dean did. With Dean having had to grow up too fast, he expected Sam to grow along a similar trajectory. Unfortunately, that meant that Sam never really had a childhood either.

7 Dean Valued Sam Over Anything Else

While Dean was always going to be a poor father figure for Sam, as he was little more than a child himself, that doesn't mean that he didn't love Sam with all his heart. The responsibility warped their relationship, but Dean loved him all the same.

In fact, Dean often valued Sam over everything else — including himself. Nothing was as important as Sam. It frustrated the younger Winchester for years, but it was an enduring part of Dean's self-concept.

6 Separated For A Long While

One of the most tragic parts about Sam and Dean is that they spent so many years apart. The brothers were dependent on each other, but Dean was initially the one who felt that bond much more strongly than Sam did. After all, he was the one who came back.

When Sam was in law school, Dean was completely alone. John had disappeared, and Dean was left having to right the ship by himself. It was utterly tragic and clearly devastated Dean.

5 Their Roles Flipped

While the show initially began with Sam trying to escape life as a hunter, he really grew into the role later in his life. Eventually, it was Dean who struggled to manage the relationships he'd grown from it.

After all, when Sam was in the Cage, it was Dean who managed to put together a normal life. Once Sam found the Men of Letters, he carved out his own niche in the world. That was something that Dean never really had the chance to experiment with.

4 Somewhat Awkward

One of the most unexpected things to happen on Supernatural was Dean dying mere moments after the brothers clawed their way free of Chuck's machinations. The brothers had come so far, only to have their adventures cut short by a rusty nail.

It was horrifically tragic, only to be made somewhat worse by the fact that the brothers had just proclaimed their freedom. Of course, it was in an incredibly awkward scene that felt as forced as anything else. In reality, it showed that they didn't know how they should feel about that freedom, which is tragic.

3 Brothers At Heart

Some funny moments in the show came about whenever the brothers actually acted like brothers. When they argue over pointless things, debate the merits of John Winchester, or talk about law school, the two are little more than the average siblings.

It helps to establish the bond between them, and it makes it believable how much they care about each other. After all, they had been through everything with each other, so it's entirely understandable that they would rely on one another for mundane things too.

2 Emotionally Stunted

As much as the brothers often had long and winding monologues about their feelings, it's hard to deny that Dean was emotionally stunted. Just getting Dean to talk about his problems was like pulling teeth.

For Sam, it was an eternal force of frustration that Dean would never communicate. It's one of the reasons that many fans outright dislike Dean and adore Sam.

1 The Heart Of The Show

At the center of Supernatural was always the brothers. Sam and Dean had a profound relationship that made the show incredibly engaging, and it stole the hearts of fans.

While Castiel, Bobby, and the Impala clearly had huge effects on Sam and Dean, they were the ones who started the show, and it ended with them. The emotional core and the ones that the audience clung to, their bond kept the show alive for over a decade.
