With only one episode of Supernatural left, here are some predictions about what will happen in the series finale. The penultimate episode, “Inherit the Earth,” wrapped up the major plot arc for season 15, but there are still some unanswered questions about what Dean and Sam Winchester will do with the rest of their lives. Now that the boys are free of God’s influence, what kind of ending will they write for themselves? Will the Winchesters continue the hunt monsters, or will the boys settle down for good?

Supernatural premiered in 2005 as a show about two brothers on the road in search of their missing father. As they travelled across the nation, the Winchesters encountered a variety of supernatural monsters and carried on the family business of “saving people and hunting things.” Each season brought a new challenge for the boys to face in their quest to save the world, including demons, angels and even God (a.k.a. Chuck).

The final season of Supernatural pits Dean, Sam, Jack and Castiel against God as he embarks on a mission of destruction, ready to erase the world and all its alternate realities. In a shocking twist in episode 18, "Despair," Castiel was taken by the Empty after confessing to Dean that he loved him, leaving the Winchesters and their surrogate son Jack as the only people left on the planet. In the most recent episode, Jack was able to defeat God after absorbing power from Michael and Lucifer (who died) as well as the deity himself. After restoring the world to normal, Jack left Earth, becoming the new God. The final scenes show Dean and Sam driving off into the sunset before recapping some of Supernatural's best moments in a montage. Having finally escaped fate, it's up to the Winchesters to decide how their story will end.

The Winchesters Will Live Happily Ever After

Sam makes the Ultimate Sacrifice To Save Eileen and Eileen watches over him in Supernatural

The penultimate episode of Supernatural ends with a conclusive defeat of God by the Winchesters and Jack, but still leaves some loose ends. One of the biggest questions yet to be answered is whether Sam will finally get his happy ending with love interest Eileen (Shoshannah Stern). In episode 18, "Despair," Eileen is texting Sam before she suddenly vanishes into thin air with the rest of the planet's population, leaving Sam to mourn her death in a heart-wrenching scene. Jack has since restored everyone who was destroyed by God, which presumably includes Eileen, although she is not specifically seen in the ending of episode 19, "Inherit the Earth."

It's likely the final episode of Supernatural will include a touching reunion between Sam and Eileen, who were on their way to a loving partnership before God stepped in. In the classic "happily ever after" scenario, the couple would enter a peaceful retirement. If Sam does decide to give up hunting, it's easy to imagine him living somewhere in the mountains with Eileen, with two small children running around and a family dog. Another option is for Sam and Eileen to give up active hunting but continue researching and living in the bunker, with Sam becoming a Man of Letters. This would keep them adjacent to the hunting lifestyle, but still give them some measure of peace, perhaps with a crotchety Dean dropping in every so often to tease them about their domestic bliss.

Many fans of Destiel, the fanfiction-inspired romance between Dean and Castiel, would like to see Dean achieve the same domesticity alongside Cas. It's unknown whether Cas was restored by Jack, since he was taken by the Empty rather than being destroyed by God. Although many would like to see Castiel come back, his death may be a more permanent one. Plus, even if Castiel is restored, his relationship with Dean is still uncertain.

Dean's reaction to Castiel's love confession and death was not directly addressed in episode 19, "Inherit the Earth." Dean's silent grief at the end of the 18th episode seems to indicate that Castiel's love for Dean is unrequited, although Dean obviously has a close friendship with Castiel at the very least. Regardless of Dean's feelings for the angel, his stubbornness could prompt him to embark on a quest to bring Castiel back to life. Once reunited, Dean and Castiel's relationship could bloom into a romantic one (if the writers double down on Destiel), but it seems more likely that the two will keep their relationship alive as hunting partners. If Dean does settle down in the bunker, perhaps he will assume Bobby's role as a hunting coordinator, conning police departments and training the youngsters.

Dean Winchester Will Continue Fighting Evil

While Sam has always dreamed of getting out of hunting and settling down — from the beginning of Supernatural to the end — Dean is much more entrenched in the lifestyle. A consummate hunter, Dean has often talked about going out fighting, with his boots on and a gun in his hand. The finale could show a final battle against the supernatural, ending with a victory for the Winchesters as they rid the world of monsters forever. Perhaps the Winchester Gospel will become a reality and the existence of the supernatural will be revealed to the world at large.

Assuming monsters continue to be a threat in Jack's world, Dean (and possibly Sam) could choose to continue doing what they do best: fighting supernatural monsters until the end. Both brothers have said at different times that they feel exhausted by the endless war against the supernatural, but maybe a return to killing run of the mill monsters is exactly what they need. A life on the road could still be a fitting ending for the brothers as they ride off in the iconic Impala. The finale may show one or both Winchesters tackling yet another case, continuing their endless ride down the road of redemption.

Dean and Sam Become Cosmic Beings

With Billie dead and the next reaper in line also having been killed, the position of Death in the Supernatural universe is now vacant. Dean's close (if contentious) relationship with the previous Death as well as Billie could herald his ascension to the role. After all, who more fitting to take over as Death than the man who killed her? Dean's even had some practice wielding the ring of power back in season 6. The brothers have spent so long battling the supernatural that a reward in which they gain supernatural powers doesn't seem out of the question. With Jack taking his place as the new God, perhaps he'll also raise up his family to become something more.
