Supernatural season 8 episode 6 saw the return of DJ Qualls' Garth. Supernatural started life as an X-Files inspired series about two hunky brothers named Sam and Dean Winchester hunting down supernatural creatures while searching for their missing father. It's doubtful anyone involved with the show knew it would end up running for fifteen seasons, but its winning formula and ability to shake up the template periodically kept fans coming back.

The Winchester brothers have battled an endless array of creatures, demons, angels and even shaken off a few deaths along the way. Supernatural fans will be sad to see it end after so many years, but despite its enduring popularity it never produced a spinoff. This wasn't for lack of trying, with shows like Wayward Sisters and Supernatural: Bloodlines being pitched but never moving ahead. It did produce an anime fittingly titled Supernatural: The Anime Series, though schedule issues prevented Jensen Ackles from voicing Dean in all but the last two episodes.

Supernatural season 8 episode 6 "Southern Comfort" finds Dean and Sam reluctantly teaming up for a hunt. Their relationship has been strained since Dean got out of Purgatory and brought a vampire friend called Benny with him, but they agree to look into a case involving a vengeful spirit possessing people who hold grudges. They also learn Garth - another hunter - is also on the case. Garth has also taken over Bobby's position in the hunting community, which annoys Dean; he later snatches Bobby's trademark cap off Garth's head.

While the fandom is mixed on Garth, Supernatural season 8 episode 6 makes good use of him. He injects some comic relief into the tense relationship between Dean and Sam and proves himself to be good at his job. He also reveals he was once a dentist and that his first kill was the Tooth Fairy. Dean refuses to take him seriously and rejects his offer to be a shoulder to cry on following his Purgatory escape. Since the episode is about an angry spirit that takes over those holding intense grudges via a coin, its only natural Dean gets possessed towards the end of "Southern Comfort."

Supernatural season 8 episode 6 ends with a possessed Dean confronting his brother with some bitter feelings, but Garth punches him out, making Dean drop the coin. It also turns out Garth can't be possessed by the spirit since he doesn't hold any grudges. Even Dean comes around to Garth in the end and puts Bobby's cap back on his head as a mark of respect. Garth didn't end up being a big recurring character on the show and only appeared in a further two episodes of Supernatural.
