A new trailer for Supernatural’s final episodes teases a dramatic end for The CW's long-running show. Now in its 15th season, Supernatural is the longest-running American live-action fantasy TV series, having first premiered on what was then WB back in 2005. Its longevity is in large part due to the show’s passionate fan base, which has helped Supernatural to survive the ever-changing landscape of television. That fan base is sometimes referred to as a family not just by the people who comprise it but by the show’s cast and crew as well.

The series is very much about family; it stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles as Sam and Dean Winchester, the monster-hunting brothers who choose each other over everything else. They’ve battled every entity from myth and lore imaginable, even taking on Heaven and Hell. The Winchesters are now tangling with God (AKA the writer), Chuck himself. In season 14, it was revealed that Chuck has been toying with the Winchester’s all along — subjecting them to tragedy and heartache for his own enjoyment. Once the Winchesters, along with their trusted ally Castiel (Misha Collins) refused to play along, Chuck raised Hell on Earth, literally.

The first half of season 15 hasn’t seen the Winchesters make much progress in their efforts to best Chuck, and they can’t just kill God because that would essentially end the universe. However, in the final Supernatural episode of 2019, the brothers were informed by the archangel Michael (Jake Abel) that God can be sealed away. To do this, the brothers will have to overcome Chuck’s “ending,” the climactic killing of one brother by the other, a recurring Biblical theme. A new trailer teasing the second half of season 15 has arrived online and things aren’t looking great for Sam and Dean. It begins with Chuck saying, “All good things must come to an end,” and then Dean telling Sam, “We lost.” Check out the trailer, which was recently posted to YouTubebelow:

Among all of the familiar faces and callbacks which appear in the trailer is a familiar quote from season 5’s finale entitled “Swan Song.” That episode was the end of Supernatural creator Eric Kripke’s five-year plan for the show, and Kripke left as showrunner after season 5. The aforementioned quote spoken by Chuck in that episode was, “No doubt, endings are hard. But then again, nothing really ever ends, does it?”

At the time, the quote was symbolic of the show’s continuation into season 6 despite season 5’s sense of finality. This time around, the show truly is ending. All previous attempts at Supernatural spin-offs have failed and this appears to be everyone’s final foray in the Supernatural universe. After 15 years, everyone is hoping to see Sam and Dean drive their 1967 Impala off into the sunset — continuing to save people and hunt things until the end of their days. Even though the newest trailer paints a different picture, the real-world  Supernatural family is likely to be satisfied either way.
