Supernatural made a grand return after its pandemic-enforced break, with Sam Winchester parodying one of Avengers: Endgame's most famous scenes. From the death of Tony Stark to the introduction of "Fat Thor," Avengers: Endgame is packed with memorable moments, but the one that had fans jumping out of their theater seats was Captain America wielding Mjolnir. The famously picky hammer can only be lifted by those deemed worthy, and Steve Rogers was teased as a potential candidate by Avengers: Age of Ultron. The hint was paid off tenfold in Avengers: Endgame, when Captain America summoned Mjolnir into his hand and began whacking Thanos' goons left and right.

Facing a similarly dire threat are Sam and Dean Winchester in Supernatural season 15, the final run in the show's illustrious history. Although a fight against God is on the horizon for Team Free Will, season 15's "Last Holiday" introduces Mrs. Butters, a Wood Nymph trapped within the Men of Letters' Bunker that Sam and Dean call home. Mrs. Butters reveals that the Bunker contains a radar system for monsters, allowing the Winchesters to ease through hunt after hunt in rapid succession.

Since the monster radar makes killing paranormal creatures so super-easy, Supernatural indulges in a montage sequence, showing Sam and Dean bursting into a variety of monster dens armed with machetes, guns, RPGs and, best of all, ancient Norse hammers. In the montage's final scene, Dean rocks into a barn wielding his trademark grenade launcher, while Sam Winchester appears from the fog sheepishly holding Mjolnir. In true superhero fashion, Sam draws the mythical hammer close to his face, mimicking Steve Rogers during the final fight against Thanos, albeit with more flannel. The brothers were evidently facing off against one of the lesser gods in Supernatural's world, as Mjolnir is one of the few weapons in the Winchester arsenal that can finish off a deity (and a God is one of the few reasons Dean might be allowed to whip out his grenade launcher).

The scene is a fantastic reference to Avengers: Endgame, but Supernatural has its own history with Thor's hammer. Although the God of Thunder himself is never shown in Supernatural, Mjolnir appeared in a 2012 episode of Supernatural season 8. The Winchester brothers crashed a relic auction where Mjolnir was being sold off to the highest bidder. Sam seized the unattended hammer and used it to quash two villains in attendance, but unlike the MCU's variant, Mjolnir can apparently be lifted by anyone in Supernatural's lore. Naturally, Sam and Dean took the weapon back to their Bunker and added it to their extensive collection of mythical artifacts, but Mjolnir hasn't been glimpsed in Supernatural until now. Just as Avengers: Endgame paid off the MCU's Mjolnir tease with Steve RogersSupernatural's final season revisited Sam's previous dalliance with Thor's signature hammer, giving him one last moment of glory.

This certainly isn't the fist time Supernatural has used weapons to reference wider pop culture. After Jeffrey Dean Morgan (who plays the Sam and Dean's father, John) debuted in The Walking Dead, Dean was seen using Lucille, the barbed wire baseball bat synonymous with Negan, Morgan's character in the zombie apocalypse. Dean even dropped a passing reference to John leaving the bat lying around. Sam Winchester's Captain America impression is similarly tongue-in-cheek and self-aware, and offers Supernatural fans a small moment of comedy before the serious business of the final episodes begins.
