Will Supernatural end with Jack replacing Chuck in the role of God? The Winchester brothers find themselves desperately in need of a miracle in Supernatural season 15, having made an enemy out of God himself. Last season, it was revealed that God had been dictating Sam and Dean's misery for most of their lives, purely for his own entertainment. Now, Sam and Dean are gunning for a God that has not only lost faith in humanity, but also no longer has an interest in it, threatening to pull the plug and start afresh with a whole new batch of particles and DNA. While the brothers have found a potential chink in God's holy armor thanks to the returning Michael, Dean pointed out in "Our Father Who Aren't In Heaven" that the Winchesters can't actually kill God, since to do so would wipe out his creation also.

One character the Winchesters undoubtedly wish were alive to lend a hand is Jack, the half-human son of Lucifer who acted more or less as an adopted son to Sam and Dean. Jack has certainly had his wrathful moments, forcing humans to always tell the truth for example, but living with the Winchesters taught the boy right from wrong, generally speaking. That was until God effortlessly killed Jack and sent him to the Empty in Supernatural's season 14 finale. Thanks to a tease at the end of the same episode, however, the audience know that Jack is set to return in the near future, having been awoken by none other than Death. Although Jack has yet to appear in Supernatural's final season, could his role be to become the new "God" and allow the Winchesters to take down Chuck without triggering the apocalypse?

There is, of course, a precedent for this sort of thing in the world of Supernatural. When Dean killed the original Death, the world was thrust into chaos as a result, until the most recently killed Reaper (in this case Billie) was promoted to the top spot and became the "new Death," establishing the natural balance once again. It's worth noting that Supernatural has previously drawn a parallel between God and Death with regards to their standing in the universe. The original Grim Reaper once told the Winchesters that only he and God would be left alive at the very end, and that it would be up to Death to reap the creator of all things when the time came. With this in mind, if Death is a position that can be passed down from one to the other, why can't the same apply to God? Indeed, who's to say that the title hasn't already changed hands, and that Chuck is just the current God?

A reveal of this magnitude would create a narrative loophole that might allow the Winchesters to definitively finish off Chuck. Since Supernatural is in its final season, it would somewhat disappointing if the brothers were to just seal away their last major opponent, rather than defeat him properly, remove any possibility of a return and send viewers away satisfied. A fight to the death makes much more sense, and might even be part of God's grand "story," whereby the Winchesters are forced to kill him and thus condemn themselves and the entire world to death. Just the type of cruel irony Chuck thrives on.

Perhaps it's for this reason Billie has revived Jack - because she intends to use him as a successor to God that would stabilize the universe if the current Lord was ever killed. As a nephilim, Jack has only just begun to tap into his latent power, but operating at full steam, the character could certainly grow powerful enough to take Chuck's job. More pertinently, it would be a very poetic ending for someone the Winchesters personally raised as their own to become God of the universe. The brothers have spent 15 seasons protecting the world from monsters and it would be a fitting conclusion to their story if nurturing Jack and teaching him morality resulted in the universe finally being ruled by a fair and just God. That way, even if Sam and Dean die in Supernatural's final episode, their legacy will live on eternally.
