Supernatural fans attending PaleyFest 2018 next month will get a chance to see the show’s Scooby-Doo crossover a week early. Though Supernatural has foregone the meta episode route over the past few seasons, the out-of-box stories were what helped set it apart in the early years. Whether being transported to a world where Supernatural was a TV series or actually going inside fake shows thanks to the manipulation of Loki (aka Gabriel), the tales brought some much-needed levity to the story of the Winchesters. But season 13 may just beat all of those previous episodes thanks to a crossover so perfect it’s a wonder it’s taken this long.
We learned last year that a Supernatural crossover with Scooby-Doo was in the works and would arrive sometime this year. Details have been slim, but it’s said to naturally be a darker take on the cartoon – and sure enough, a bootleg look at the art confirmed the Winchesters will in fact be animated. A poster and title for the Supernatural/Scooby-Doo episode (‘Scoobynatural’ of course) have since been unveiled, and it turns out some fans will be able to watch the episode earlier than previously expected.
EW is reporting that the Supernatural/Scooby-Doo crossover ‘Scoobynatural’ will air Thursday, March 29, just over a week after the episode premieres at the Supernatural panel at PaleyFest 2018 on Tuesday, March 20. You can check out a higher-resolution, official version of the episode’s artwork below:
Dean has shown his affection for Scooby-Doo a number of times before, and the cartoon physics of the series and general M.O. certainly fit into the world of the Winchesters. As for how everything will unfold, that’s still a mystery. That said, the most recent episode of Supernatural showed that Gabriel was still alive. Given the trickster angel was responsible for some of the show’s wildest episodes in the past, it’s not hard to imagine him triggering this trip into animation.
It won’t just be Sam and Dean who will team up with the crime-solving dog, either, as Castiel will be in the Supernatural/Scooby-Doo crossover as well. We haven’t heard of any other characters that will be involved, including whether the rest of Mystery, Inc. will be a part of the episode. But with an animated world to operate in, there’s really no limit to what the crossover could entail.
Supernatural season 13 continues Thursday, March 1 with ‘Good Intentions’ on The CW. ‘Scoobynatural’ airs Thursday, March 29.
