CAUTION: Spoilers ahead for Supernatural season 13

-

Three new images and a synopsis have been released for the upcoming Supernatural and Scooby-Doo crossover episode. Recently returning from a short mid-season break, Supernatural's unlucky thirteenth season has seen the Winchester brothers in all manner of trouble. Thier Mother was trapped in an apocalyptic parallel dimension, an evil archangel is looking to invade the universe, the new King of Hell is wreaking fiery havoc and, to top it all off, Lucifer managed to take control of heaven.

Given that hefty list of things to take care of, it's perhaps surprising that Supernatural season thirteen has time to include a crossover with iconic animation series, Scooby-Doo. The episode was first announced in May 2017 and it was subsequently revealed to be titled "Scoobynatural." The central trio of Sam, Dean and Castiel are all confirmed to be lending their vocal talents to the episode and Supernatural stalwart Robert Singer will be directing, as stated by a recent spooky poster release.

With the March 29th air date for "Scoobynatural" inching closer, a synopsis and a set of photos have been released for the episode via EW. The images see Supernatural's heroic trio of hunters mixing it up with the famous Scooby Gang, hiding in giant vases and, of course, running through spooky corridors. The synopsis reads:

“SUPERNATURAL” GETS ANIMATED WHEN SAM, DEAN AND CASTIEL ARE TRANSPORTED INTO THE WORLD OF SCOOBY DOO – Sam (Jared Padalecki), Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Castiel (Misha Collins) are transported into the animated world of Scooby Doo where they join forces with the Scooby gang to solve a ghostly mystery. Robert Singer directed the episode written by Jim Krieg & Jeremy Adams"

The photos don't give too much away regarding the plot of "Scoobynatural" but do confirm that the animation will be incredibly faithful to the Scooby-Doo series and that the episode will very probably lean more towards the lighter side of Supernatural than the death, doom and destruction side. The live-action photo is also notable for featuring Dean wearing Fred's classic tie. The synopsis does, however, partly confirm how this crossover comes about in-story, with Sam, Dean and Cass "transported" into Scooby's world to solve a mystery. It would seem likely that the trio must solve the fictional case in order to escape back to their own world.

Of course, a huge question mark still hangs over exactly what or who transports the heroes into Scooby-land and one of the most likely suspects has to be the archangel Gabriel. Long presumed dead, Gabriel recently returned to the Supernatural fold with the reveal that he was being held captive by the dastardly Asmodeus. The Gabriel character is well-known for having a twisted sense of pop-culture focused humor and previously sent Sam and Dean on a madcap adventure within the world of television. The archangel certainly has the power and personality to animate the Winchesters but why exactly he would do this remains to be seen.
