UPDATE: April Fools! A Supernatural prequel series isn't happening, but considering that spinoffs have struggled to take off, perhaps there should be a young Winchester show.

UPDATE: The CW is in fact developing a Supernatural prequel series called 'The Winchesters' that focuses on Sam and Dean's parents.

Supernatural prequel series starring teen versions of Sam and Dean Winchester will begin development after the main show wraps up. The Winchesters have endured a long and bloody ride over the past 15 years, with failed romances, sibling squabbles, and a rapidly shortening book of contacts. After 15 seasons, the adventures of Sam and Dean will come to an end with the completion of the current run, but only after the brothers commit to ultimate act of blasphemy and help kill God - an egotistical and arrogant writer in Supernatural's universe.

As expected, Supernatural's demise has triggered a wave of emotion for many fans. Reports of wealthy viewers attempting to bribe Jensen and Jared to return for one more season have surfaced in recent months, while others have attempted to recreate the show's time-traveling spell, hoping to go back to 2005 and relive Supernatural from the very beginning. The CW have explored the possibility of spinoffs in the past, first with Bloodlines in 2014 and again with 2018's Wayward Sisters, but while the first effort lacked bite, the improved second attempt simply fell by the wayside.

Supernatural fans can now sleep soundly once again, as a continuation of the franchise has been confirmed, and is set to premiere in early April 2021. Supernatural: Young Blood is a prequel to the main series, and will focus on a young Sam and Dean Winchester as they attempt to navigate the dual perils of slaying monsters and finding dates to the high school prom. There remains no word on casting as of yet, but it has been suggested that Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles' real life children could take over their fathers' roles, thanks to a little digital aging. Meanwhile, a leaked casting call suggests Castiel will take on a female vessel in the prequel. A press release from The CW reads:

The CW is the undisputed home of Supernatural and we are very excited to continue that relationship with Supernatural: Young Blood. Taking the Winchester brothers back to their teenage years will shine a new light on these two legendary characters, as Sam and Dean struggle to balance their hunter lifestyle with the everyday pitfalls of growing up. We acknowledge the strong and loyal fan base Supernatural has developed during its time on The CW, and hope that diving into the Winchesters' pubescent years will continue the action and excitement for years to come.

Along with the press release came a statement from Supernatural co-star and Sam Winchester himself, Jared Padalecki, who intriguingly refused to rule out a cameo appearance:

Although Jensen and I are very emotional about leaving Sam and Dean behind, we're thrilled that the Supernatural story will be passed down to a younger generation, and hope the SPN family are excited as we are about the future. And, of course, you never know what can happen in the world of Supernatural... maybe the older Sam Winchester will turn up along the way to show the youngsters a thing or two.

Supernatural has already partially explored the young Winchesters' lives via the use of flashbacks, and it'll be interesting to see how that idea could be spun out into an entire series. However, it's also worth bearing in mind that Sam was of college age during Supernatural's first season, so if the Young Blood prequel proves to be a hit, it won't be long until the Winchesters are young men once again. In this instance, the new series could simply transition from a prequel to a reboot, ensuring that Supernatural lives on into future decades.
