Supernatural's Loki and God actors Richard Speight Jr. and Rob Benedict address their possible returns in the upcoming prequel show, The Winchesters. Originally created by Eric Kripke, the fantasy horror drama series revolved around brothers Sam and Dean Winchester as they journey around the country hunting down various dangerous paranormal beings while also finding themselves involved in apocalyptic events. Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles led the cast of Supernatural as Sam and Dean, respectively.

Benedict first appeared in Supernatural as Chuck Shurley, the author of a metafictional book series telling the stories of the Winchesters and their various hunts and world-saving efforts, having an omniscient knowledge for supposedly being a Prophet of the Lord, only to later be revealed to be God in season 11 and serve as a main antagonist in the final few seasons. Speight Jr. has a rare honor of being one of the few actors to portray multiple characters in the show's run, having first seemingly appeared as Loki the Trickster, only to later have been revealed to be the archangel Gabriel taking on Loki's appearance in season 2's "Tall Tales" and eventually playing the Norse god himself in season 13's "Unfinished Business". Having run for 15 seasons, Supernatural has a wealth of characters and creatures to pull from for its upcoming prequel series and two are eager to hop onboard.

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly for their rewatch podcast of the series, Supernatural's Loki and God actors Speight Jr. and Benedict addressed their prequel show return possibilities. The former jokingly expressed "not only are we interested, but we expect it" with the latter concurring that while "demanding it is maybe too strong," he was also "expecting it" and is interested and hopeful. See what the two shared below:

Speight Jr.: We are personal friends with [writer] Robbie Thompson and [producers] Jensen and Danneel Ackles and gosh darnit, if I turn on the show and there's some other jackhole playing Gabriel, there's gonna be hell to pay. [Laughs] I love that the universe is continuing, it's cool. I think they're doing it in a very clever way. Obviously, we know the show had a couple of failed spin-offs, I think this is a really creative way to tell the story using characters people already know and love. I was so excited when Jensen brought in Robbie Thompson to write the script, just a great writer.

Benedict: I think demanding it is maybe too strong, but yes, expecting it, hoping. We're excited about the show and we're excited about the possibility. [Thompson] wrote some of my favorite episodes of Supernatural for sure.

Given Loki and God's recurring interactions with the Winchester brothers in the original series, it would make some sense for the two to return in some capacity for the upcoming Supernatural prequel show. That being said, with God having first been introduced as Chuck as he chronicled the lives of Sam and Dean, some intricate work would need to be done to convincingly weave him into Mary and John's lives as hunters before the birth of their future hunter sons. However, with Gabriel's time on Earth posing as Loki prior to his interactions with the brothers largely unknown, there is plenty of potential ground to cover for his character in the prequel show.

Though some fans may find the idea of narrative retcons unappealing for the prequel show, the desire to see the fan-favorite Supernatural Loki and God actors return to the fold may outweigh these concerns. Additionally, with Robbie Thompson serving as The Winchesters' writer and having been involved in the original show for the better part of five years, the prequel is in the hands of someone well familiar with the deeper lore and formula of the franchise. While audiences await the next chapter in the series, they can catch up with all 15 seasons of Supernatural streaming on Netflix.
